The model Minami Tanaka continues her ascent.

After a bestselling photo book, the former TV announcer has turned her jukujo charms to lingerie. She already set a precedent for how good she can make lingerie look with her 2017 Anan magazine shoot, which helped launch her career on this current path.

The 34-year-old model (and alumnus of the prestigious Aoyama Gakuin University) is the new face of top lingerie brand Peach John, a role previously filled by the likes of Miyuki Watanabe, Saeko, Elaiza Ikeda, and Haruna Kojima.

Usually these models are younger, so it’s an interesting step that Peach John has chosen a celebrity who is technically in jukujo territory now. A quite extraordinary scandal appeared in the Japanese media in the last few days. The model and celebrity Loveli (real name, Izumi Shirahama) is facing prosecution over an allegation of sexual assault on another woman in May 2019.

The Shukan Bunshun has published a sensational interview with the victim, named only as Ms. A.

According to the story, the Filipino-Japanese Loveli allegedly assaulted Ms. A while they were staying in Shirahama in Wakayama. After drinking, her accuser says, Loveli threw herself on the woman in the early hours of the morning, taking off her panties and going down on her. “I really want to lick it,” Loveli supposedly said.

Despite A’s protestations, Loveli then penetrated A vaginally with her finger.

The assault apparently ended two and an half hours later. A filed a police report with local authorities that August, and it was referred to the prosecutors in March last year, when Loveli made a slightly ambiguous response through social media. The case has become more widely known now due to the recent interview with in the weekly tabloid.

Unless she makes a private settlement with the victim, we assume she may well be indicted and go on trial. Her lawyer says that a crime did not take place.

The curiously named Loveli, who is now 31, has half a million Instagram followers and is the older sister of Alan Shirahama, a member of the boy band Generations. She married a filmmaker, Gota Yonekura, in November 2019 and the couple has a child.

It is very hard to see her career recovering from this scandal.

We find it especially sad because it may damage the reputation of lesbians, who do not enjoy a visible presence in mainstream Japanese society. While sexual assault and even rape do sometime rear their ugly heads in the Japanese entertainment industry, it is almost exclusively heterosexual, male-on-female cases.

Japanese condoms are famous for two things: being among the best and thinnest in the world; and for being rarely used by men in Japan, who prefer to finish inside (and then have shotgun weddings), or to emulate porn by pulling out and finishing on the body/face of their partner.

But they were recently in the news for another reason: a curious historical discovery.

Indeed, this condom may well be the oldest one we’ve seen. Thankfully, it’s not still in use.

The Osaka-based Morishita Jintan has been around for 130 years. The pharmaceutical and medical device maker was one of Japan’s first condom sellers in modern times, and there was a reminder of this when someone found one of its past products.

A 120-year-old condom was found in the storehouse (kura) of an inn in a town in Ishikawa Prefecture. A storehouse? So, was that building once doubling as a place for illicit rendezvous between couples on the road?

The Yamato Kinu-type condom, which probably dates from the late 19th century, is in good condition, though we would not recommend relying on the prophylactic for your next session in bed. The actual sheath part seems to have completely deteriorated, leaving behind just the attractive box and the ring.

The condom is set to go on display at the Morishita Jintan headquarters. We doubt if this is the oldest existing condom or male contraceptive in Japan, but it’s nonetheless a fascinating glimpse into sexual history in the country.

The Yamato Kinu condom was imported from France and sold locally by Morishita Jintan, who advertised the brand specifically as effective against syphilis, which was then prevalent in Japan (and on the rise again).

Spare a thought for Yui Imaizumi.

The former Keyakizaka46 cutie seemed to have found love and happiness with a man, albeit one who does not use condoms and presumes there are no consequences to ejaculating inside her.

After a tough time last year when she contracted the coronavirus, but also showed us how busty she is on Zoom, Imaizumi recently announced her marriage to 28-year-old YouTuber Mahoto Watanabe.

But then people remembered Watanabe’s past, such as when was arrested in June 2019 for beating up his then girlfriend while drunk. He allegedly even stepped on her face. He was not charged, it should be noted, and he issued apology videos, but it effectively brought his YouTuber career to an end — after a peak of 2.8 million subscribers.

And then more news came out. Screenshots spread on social media showing an exchange between Watanabe and a 15-year-old schoolgirl, where he requests her to send him lewd photos of herself. He even asks her to send a selfie with her student ID so he can confirm her age.

He admits to being in a relationship with Yui Imaizumi but, because he “has lolicon,” she doesn’t do it for him sexually. (Clearly not quite the truth, since she is demonstrably beautiful and he managed to get her pregnant.)

Watanabe came clean to his management company, UUUM, that the messages are genuine and the agency announced they were cutting ties with him. (In Japan, talent management agencies employ the talent, not the other way around.) So he probably has no income anymore.

Imaizumi, who is also a lingerie model for Peach John, has not been active on her official social media channels since last autumn. Perhaps it was around then that she realized she was pregnant and had to make a big decision. Though according to media reports, Watanabe’s exchange with the schoolgirl asking her to send him explicit photos took place in November.

There is a public park located a short walk from the main part of Nichome, Shinjuku’s gay neighborhood. It underwent remodeling and reopened with fences and a gate. Unlike almost all other small parks in the city, it was now closed at night. The proximity of the gay district, whose denizens had presumably used the park to gather, drink, and possibly get intimate, was no coincidence.

Now we read about another case related to this.

The owner of a sento public bathhouse was understandably peeved that patrons were using his establishment to have sex. While Japanese porn might give you other ideas, sento and onsen (hot springs) are generally not places for couples to hook up — with the notable exception of private baths, where a tryst can be, well, private.

TBS News reports that two men in their thirties were arrested and charged with public obscenity after they ignored signs in a Shibuya ward bathhouse warning patrons not to engage in sexual acts.

The two men, who admit to the charges, couldn’t resist having some fun when they found themselves alone in the public area, and were caught having sex for some 20 minutes in the open bath. The door was unlocked and over a dozen guests were using other facilities.

The manager, who has run the bathhouse for decades, says he has reported to police about 40 such incidents among gay men on the premises of his bathhouse, and that’s just in the last four or five years. It got to the point where the manager put up a sign specifically warning that “LGBT customers without morals or standards are not permitted.” His sign states that certain acts and behavior are forbidden, such as touching and kissing, but also “intense looks.” (Such anti-gay signage is relatively common at bathhouses in Japan.)

It seems this time that the police wanted to crack down and set an example.

Particular bathhouses do acquire a reputation as places where gay men can go and expect to hook up with other guys on the premises. Spa World in Osaka was famously one such place, we recall from our years in the city.

Shibuya ward has promoted itself as a place of diversity in recent years, including passing the first ordinance in Japan giving de facto legal recognition to same-sex partnerships. Not everyone is on board with that message, it seems.

Tenga is not just content merely with producing some of the most sophisticated and best-designed Japanese adult toys, and achieving the distinction as pretty much the sole Japanese sex toy line to have global distribution in its own right, the brand also continues to market its products in unique and fun ways.

Nayuka Mine is one of the most high-profile ex-porn stars in Japan.

One set of images that caught our eye on Twitter were these two photos of the insane disorder wrought upon a porn shop in Koriyama, Fukushima.

The manager of Book Fan 24 shared two pictures of the shelves emptied and countless numbers of DVDs and adult manga piled up on the floor. While the damage is probable minimal, all the DVDs would need to be sorted and re-shelved in the right order (presumably by performer or studio).

In the space of less than a month last autumn, the unnamed arrested woman sent a whopping 293 messages, including nude photos and obscene content.

Now apprehended and safely in custody, the stalker has admitted the charges. “I still like her,” she told police.

Not so with the tweet, however.

But Kana has, we discover, recently left her agency as of late January to make a go of it freelance. So this is the 27-year-old trying some bold new marketing strategies that her agency would not have condoned.
