We’ve all seen those pop-ups that sometimes appear on particularly dodgy sites, demanding that you pay a ridiculous amount of money.

Most of the time, you can click away and rest easy that it’s a bluff.

But sometimes people do pay.

Spare a thought for this Japanese man in his fifties, living in the frigid northernly city of Sapporo. He kept himself warm by watching some porn online.

But then he got a text to his phone in October from someone claiming to be NTT Finance, which is a genuine company (a subsidiary of the telecommunications giant). He duly rang the number in the message, only to find himself speaking to someone who claimed to be from a certain NTS Debt Collection — once again, the name of an actual company.

They asserted that the man owed money — specifically, porn site fees.

Not being too savvy in the ways of the web, he immediately transferred the fee to the bank account number they supplied.

That alone is a cautionary enough tale, perhaps, both for educating yourself about scams and online porn, but then the man started to receive further demands over the next two months.

These were from other security “representatives” who claimed, for instance, his phone had caused a virus to spread, and he had to pay damages.

It was only after dozens of payments, totaling ¥109 million (US$1.05 million), that the unnamed man finally got suspicious and recently went to the police, whose investigations revealed that he had been shelling out his cash to scammers.

The police shared the story with the media, where we saw it, but there’s no word if the fraudsters were caught.

Tenga, the Apple of the Japanese adult market, is convinced that self-pleasure should be a premium experience. And it also knows how to market its products in a truly savvy and novel way.

Case in point is its latest campaign in which the brand gives people to win a “gold” Premium Tenga cup just by retweeting a certain tweet by March 31.

The exact nature of the age of consent in Japan is something that crops up conversations about the country, and people often seem unsure of the facts.

As the Asahi clarifies, “anyone having sex with a minor under 13 can be arrested for statutory rape under the Criminal Law, but charging someone with sex crimes for having intercourse with a person over the age of 13 requires proof of violent action or threats.”

There are now growing calls for the age of consent to be raised from 13 to 16, as reported by Unseen Japan. Concretely, these include a proposal in June from Human Rights Now to raise the age of consent and tighten guidelines on what constitutes sexual assault, while a student group Your Voice Matters launched a petition that attracted 40,000 signatures and was submitted to the Justice Ministry in November.

Related hashtags on Twitter have also gained some traction, though the influence they will have on the Sex Crimes Review Committee as it completes its review of the current law is debatable.

We are drawing to the end of this most difficult year and we taking a look back at 2020. Of course, the past twelve months were dominated by one global story.

Around the end of December, people started tweeted about a “worrying” new development in Akihabara, the Tokyo district known for electronics and otaku culture.

Commentators and fans have been bemoaning the commercialization of otaku subcultures — effectively appropriating them into mainstream, capitalist culture for all consumers and Akihabara into a place for tourists — since at least the 2000s.

This, though, is a little different. Because we are more surprised that people are surprised. After all, why the heck hasn’t Akiba had a store like this before? We are astonished that it is the first — even to the extent that we suspect people may be wrong in thinking it is! (To be fair, the site is itself claiming that title.) Have these people never wandered down the back alleys of Akihabara before? We can recall some particularly shady places during trips there in the first decade of the century. Once Showa-dori hosted ero-cosplay that was so provocative the police got called.

This is an area that is already home to countless maid cafes, to mountains of erotic anime and manga content (which has in the past led to censorship of advertising), and to the M’s store, one of the most popular places to shop for adult toys in Tokyo (Tenga also opened a store in the district). It is also, relatively speaking, a mere stone’s throw from areas like Ueno and Uguisudani, which are notorious for their love hotels, brothels, and sex industry establishments. The news was announced in mid-December.

Ahead of the Japanese release of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time in movie theaters on January 23, Studio Khara has posted a series of “guidelines” for fan works. As far as we know, this is the first official such move by the studio to address fan works.

The guidelines ask fans to “refrain” from “posting Evangelion fan works that are intended for pornographic purposes” (ポルノ表現そのものを目的としたもの).

Whether or not these new guidelines, which were released in late December, are a sign that the studio is set to be more litigious about fan works is unclear. Considering that its intense fandom — including fan works, sexual and otherwise — has been the core reason for the franchise’s longevity, we suspect the studio would be foolish to go after the doujinshi creators.

Right now, tourist resorts deserve our pity. Things were going so well for them until the start of 2020, after which visitors to Japan plummeted (and are now exactly zero, because the borders are closed). Even domestic tourism has dropped after the summer-autumn campaign launched by the government resulted in a spike in coronavirus infections.

Hamayanen of the popular comedy duo 8.6Sec BAZOOKAA was recently spotted coming out of a hotel in the exclusive Tokyo district of Nishi-Azabu. The 29-year-old was with a woman dressed in expensive “wild fashion.” They then headed to Roppongi Station and went for a date eating Korean BBQ.

As first reported by the tabloid FRIDAY, the 30-year-old lover of the celebrity is none other than porn star Runa Shimotsuki (霜月るな).

Shimotsuki made her debut in 2010 and has appeared mostly in gyaru-type roles. These days she also works as a DJ, though we don’t think she has technically retired from adult video yet. Her breasts may not be entirely real but they are amazing.

We can imagine he is keeping her amused with jokes and she is keeping him pleased with her own talents.
