Airi Rissen (立仙愛理) might well be one of the lesser-known idols in the AKB48 ranks, but that may change soon.

No, 13-year-old Seira Watanabe had a different kind of dream date: Godzilla.

A Japanese television show recently helped make that happen by arranging a date for her with Godzilla, as reports Kotaku.

Naturally, the kaiju was not quite its usual size.

When she spotted Godzilla outside her window at her home in Hyogo Prefecture, she almost collapsed. The teenager then promptly packed a bento lunchbox and went out on her date to Awaji Island with Japan’s most famous movie monster — with her grandfather tagging along as a chaperone, natch. (The choice of destination is not accidental: there’s a museum dedicated to Godzilla on the island.)

Things got increasingly sweet and romantic as the day wore on. She had to feed Godzilla lunch and then, while sitting on the beach at sunset, the couple enjoyed a hug and — yes! — a kiss.

Seira decided to take things even further. She proposed marriage to Godzilla, who thankfully demurred.

This being the coronavirus age, Seira spent the whole date with a face shield on. Given Godzilla’s radioactive origins, though, we imagine that catching COVID is less dangerous than the kaiju’s breath.

Sex education is notoriously inadequate in Japan, contributing to the relatively low usage of condoms by young people.

But it seems some pedagogues are determined to make up for this in other areas of teaching.

At least, that might appear to be the logic partially behind why an educational event at Kyoto University recently included a live demonstration of shibari Japanese rope bondage.

Pics and tweets about the incident went viral last week in Japan, not least because of the incongruous notion of a renowned institution hosting such a sexual subculture.

Kyoto University is one of the most prestigious colleges in the country, usually ranking in the top three.

The public demonstration was held as part of a free kinbaku (shibari)-themed symposium organized by the Unit of Kyoto Initiatives for the Humanities and Social Sciences, held on the afternoon of October 24 in a lecture room in Kyoto University’s Faculty of Letters.

Nominally held because shibari (aka kinbaku) “is transforming itself into a new trend of contemporary art,” the symposium explored “the significance and potentialities [sic] of such KINBAKU [sic] New Wave.” The lineup of guest speakers included Hajime Kinoko, a leading figure in the shibari scene, and “humanists of Kyoto University.”

Kinoko’s demonstration, which was also streamed live, featured the model Aimi, who we have written about on this blog before.

It is common now to see Uber Eats cyclist couriers zipping around Tokyo with their black bags, delivering meals to people whatever the weather.

They tend to be young and healthy, the latter quality perhaps coming from the amount of time they spend on their bikes.

The transgender community does not get much mainstream attention in Japan as elsewhere, perhaps with the exception of Matsuko Deluxe, and the major debates over pronouns and gender definitions have not dominated public discourse in the same way as they have in other countries.

Nonetheless, transgender sexuality has a long and vibrant history in Japanese culture, and the rights and needs of trans people need to be heard.

Whether out of genuine agreement with this sentiment or out of woke cynicism that spotted a marketing opportunity, Pantene recently showcased the problems that transgender people face in Japan when hunting for a job.

Job hunters often have to abide by strict and conservative dress codes, especially if interviewing with major corporations, and must fill out resumes almost always with only two options for gender (“male” or “female”).

Over 70% of LGBTQ+ people in Japan (said to comprise 8.9% of the total population) said in one study that they have trouble getting a job, with the primary cause cited as fear of discrimination and prejudice. Many also said they were uncertain about how to present themselves in an interview.

The “This Hair is Me” video made by Pantene, featuring two transgender former job-hunters, is available in Japanese with English subtitles.

For these two individuals, “hair is an important part of their identity, and a symbol of pride.”

In addition to the video, the campaign was also featured on a billboard in Omotesando Station in central Tokyo.

Incidentally, the very dynamic Japanese costume market has a lot of otoko no ko (literally, male daughter) cross-dressing costumes and outfits for more casually gender-curious wearers. In this way, the trans culture here goes beyond some conventional understandings of cis/trans, and gay/straight.

As widely reported in the print and TV media this week, top Japanese porn star (or “sexy actress” as the mainstream media euphemism has it) Yuria Satomi was the victim of theft at her exclusive Nakameguro condo on the morning of October 26.

Two thieves posing as delivery men broke into her apartment after she answered the door. The AV actress was held down by one while the other ransacked her home in search of cash. They were apparently in phone contact with and receiving instructions from an accomplice outside, said Satomi, who feared for her life during the incident despite the men’s reassurances that they were only after her money.

The men eventually found ¥2.5 million in cash in a safe (which was left unlocked) and another ¥3.5 million just lying around in a closet.

She called the police after they had left. The cops quickly identified the thieves’ car from surveillance camera footage and could swiftly arrest three male teenagers aged between 17 and 19 that same afternoon. In their car, they had ¥4 million.

Satomi lives in a prominent high-rise luxury condo in the central Tokyo district of Nakameguro. The 45-story tower has a permanent concierge on the ground floor.

Satomi’s woes with the tax authorities a few years ago exposed how women in the porn and entertainment industry earn very lucrative side incomes through compensated dating. Now aged 35, she is a porn veteran, having made her debut as Aya Koizumi in 2003.

She had so much cash in her apartment apparently to pay for upcoming “beauty expenses” (which we may assume are plastic surgery operations). The intruders seemingly knew of Yuria’s tax trouble, as the figure they accused her of hiding in her home roughly matched the back taxes she famously had to pay.

Japanese celebrity Dewi Sukarno (pictured) recently made the astonishing assertion on a TV show that “the foremost cause of infertility is abortion.”

Though abortion is relatively common in Japan, it still carries a stigma and the social structures are not in place that you might expect, as Sukarno’s ignorance demonstrates.

As Nikkei reported this month, rape survivors must get consent from their sexual predator to have an abortion.

One woman who was assaulted by an acquaintance was told by hospital after hospital that they could not proceed with an abortion without consent from the father. “You know him, so you should be able to get him to sign off,” one doctor confidently said.

Such a requirement forces rape survivors to relive trauma. In the woman’s case, she could only get an abortion after a recommendation from a support group, by which time it was a riskier and more expensive second-term abortion.

“Why do victims have to suffer again and again?” she said.

The Maternal Health Act requires consent from the mother and her “spouse,” and the Japan Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ template for abortion paperwork likewise has a field for the “spouse” to fill out.

This means that doctors may block abortions for sexual assault victims because their attackers does not agree, though a legal lobby group has submitted a written request to the Japan Medical Association asking to stop this practice.

“The [paperwork] template is a big part of the problem,” said a lawyer. “Doctors may seek consent from the attackers because they don’t want to leave part of the form blank.”

The Japan Medical Association last year told gynecologists to request documentation from sexual assault victims like a bill of indictment or a court sentence.

This bizarre situation is based on the desire to protect medical institutions against the risk of a lawsuit by the father. Sometimes the perpetrators do not even understand or recognize that they assault their victims.

Getting a bill of indictment or something similar is easier said than done, since the majority of sexual assault survivors in Japan do not contact police, whose systems and attitudes for dealing with rape and related crimes are infamously lacking, as the case of Shiori Ito made widely known.

“Being denied an abortion at the hospital could be a form of ‘second rape,'” said one representative from a support group.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, in response to criticism, did go so far recently as to clarify that the Act does not mean that doctors need the consent of rapists. But this is unlikely to stop doctors asking women for the father to sign off on the abortion procedure.

A research team at Gifu University has developed the My Girlfriend in Walk (sic), a robotic hand that the user can hold to replicate the experience of a romantic walk with a partner.

The artificial hand apparently even imitates the way a human appendage sweats and smells as well as feeling soft and warm.

Grip the hand and its built-in sensors detect the pressure of your grasp and will squeeze your hand back in reply. The hand can also work in tandem with the user’s smartphone to recognize whose hand it is holding.

Despite investing unknown amounts of time and yen in the development, the scientists decided to use wacky English translations for the marketing.

That said, the project — as yet at the prototype stage — has attracted some media attention in Japan.

With the dating scene so affected by the coronavirus, possibly never to recover quite how we knew it before, could this hand be the future savior of lonely guys?

To be honest, when we first heard about this robotic hand, we thought it sounded like a sex machine.

We read a report in the UK’s Guardian newspaper about the story of two gay men in Amagasaki, just west of Osaka, who were turned away from love hotels.

The male receptionist at one politely informed the couple that men were not allowed.

Not to be deterred from their tryst, the men tried another love hotel in the area, only to encounter an overtly homophobic attitude.

“Gay men don’t use the facilities properly,” they were told by the female receptionist without explanation.

The two men are in a civil partnership of the kind given de facto legal recognition by local governments in Japan.

In some ways, this is old news. We have heard reports of same-sex couples being turned away from love hotels for years. It is one of the reasons that Nichome — Tokyo’s main gay district — has its own small love hotels.

This is in spite of a 2018 revision to the hotel business law, which makes prevents hotels from rejecting guests for reasons of sexual orientation or gender.

Hotels that break the law can be reported, though all authorities can do is give hotel proprietors “administrative guidance,” whatever that means.

In this case, a complaint was made about the two hotels in Amagasaki and the local government reprimanded them.

There are an estimated 10,000 love hotels in Japan, visited by 1.4 million people each year.

There has been progress on LGBTQ+ rights at the local level, such as the civil partnership legislation and openly gay politicians, but — in spite of Japan’s very rich queer history — shocking attitudes still do occasionally rear their head. A member of the the Adachi ward assembly in Tokyo, for instance, recently sparked a backlash when he claimed his district would become extinct due to depopulation if the rights of sexual minorities were protected by law.

“If all Japanese women were lesbian or all Japanese men were gay, then do you think the next generation of people will be born?” he asked in the assembly.

The man, who is admittedly 79 years of age, eventually apologized and retracted his statement.

The actress Mao Miyaji is to release a new photo book, her first in 10 years.

“Aisansan” (roughly, Bright Encounter) comes out at the end of December, with preview shots already published in the weekly magazine Friday.

But most of the much-discussed nudity came from newcomers like Misato Morita, who had nothing to lose, or the actual porn star Nanami Kawakami, or actresses who had done some nudity before, like the late Ruri Shinato and Mai Ohtani — and in the case of Ami Tomite, someone who has established a reputation as a performer who regularly takes off her clothes.

In this respect, the casting of Mariya Nishiuchi is quite a coup for the producers of the series.

The technical intern training program in Japan has rightfully attracted international condemnation for legalizing what often amounts to near-slavery conditions for foreign workers, especially Vietnamese. Employers — including small manufacturers — are allowed to pay these workers extremely low wages and it is all sanctioned by the government.

The workers are trapped, unable to change jobs and frequently in debt to middle-men for the fees to get their places on the scheme and come to Japan.

Over the years, many sad stories of abuse and even suicide have emerged from the “internships” program. But we think this is the first time we have seen this outcome and it also highlights the precarious situation for man people in these COVID times.

The Japanese media has reported on the bust of a brothel, seemingly operating outside yakuza protection, where the two alleged pimps (Japanese and Chinese) were arrested and several Vietnamese women.

The latter originally came to Japan as students or technical interns but lost their jobs due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. With no money to return home, even if the borders were open and flights operating, they ended up working as prostitutes. They also had families back home who were similarly hard hit by the pandemic and so they sent money back to help them out.

The three women — aged between 24 and 35 — were employed at a delivery health escort agency called Bi Wonderful, operating out of Arakawa ward in the east of Tokyo.

They now face charges over violations of their visa status and taking part in illegal employment. Of course, they are the victims in this but are treated as criminals by police. As one person commented on Twitter, they need assistance, not arrest.

Bi Wonderful was based in an ordinary multi-tenant building and had a room where the women waited for customers.

Earlier this year we wrote about the comeback photo book featuring 40-year-old model Asami Kumakiri (熊切あさ美).

Such shotgun weddings (or dekichatta kekkon) are common here, since the need for contraception is frequently ignored, though also because it is sometimes the only way to force the all-powerful agencies to let idols marry.

Whether or not Mogami, a former member of the idol group Dempagumi.inc, is not marrying the father because they are no longer together or because she doesn’t care for the institution of marriage — or both — is not immediately clear. (We suspect it’s the former: she got pregnant, they broke up either before or after, and she is going to keep the baby.)

Her announcement has attracted some consternation online, since single moms are not usually in the limelight in Japan. (Of course, though she won’t be marrying, it only makes her a single mother on paper: she could still have support from a partner, the father or otherwise.)

While carving out a career as an actress, idol, and model, Mogami has not been afraid of defining her own path. She left a popular group in 2017, officially for health reasons, and also previously made her bisexuality public.
