Carving out a post-AKB career is notoriously difficult and only a few of the members of the supergroup have managed to achieve this — most of them the major idols who had established a reputation and following during the elections.

The rest — the dozens of minor members or “trainees” — are consigned to the dustbin of fandom upon graduation.

Recently, former AKB48 idol Kira Takahashi tried to boost her post-group fame with a semi-nude photo book — a strategy also adopted by Ayano Umeta (now working under then name Ayano Shimizu) and Nana Owada.

The Japanese government has stepped in with cash handouts for both citizens and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic in an attempt to offset the worst effects of the economic fallout. Offering a maximum of ¥2 million in a one-off lump sum to help pay rent, the money has been a lifeline for small companies like shops and restaurants.

But what about the sex industry? So far, operators of such services have been excluded from the relief program.

One woman has taken matters into her own hands, filing a lawsuit against the Japanese national government as well as two firms overseeing the administration side of the program. The woman operates a fuzoku, or sex industry, service in the Kansai region. though the lawsuit was filed at Tokyo District Court.

Call girl “delivery health” services, love hotel operators, brothels, and so on are not covered the scheme, something that the unnamed woman says is in violation of the Constitution, whose Article 14 stipulates equality for all.

The woman was one of several sex business operators who met officials in June to ask to be included in the program. They were snubbed — told there was no precedent for fuzoku businesses to be covered, since past public handout programs such as those after natural disasters have not provided money to the sex industry.

Media reports first emerged of the woman’s intention to sue in August. “The state has yet to provide any convincing explanation” for the exclusion, she told Kyodo News at the time.

These sex operators are technically doing everything by the book in terms of taxation and complying with the law, her legal team argues. But the government is concerned about a public backlash if it gives money to something everyone in society knows exists, yet does not want to think about — much less support with the public coffers (even though such businesses are contributing to those coffers). No doubt, the government is also concerned about the industry’s traditional link to organized crime — and that relief money may go into the pockets of the yakuza. (Host and hostess clubs, though, have received money, at least in Tokyo.)

According to police numbers, Japan had 31,956 officially registered sex industry businesses nationwide — and many more illegal ones — as of the end of 2019. This was a very small increase of 0.1% from the previous year. Over 60% of these are delivery health or similar businesses that dispatch sex workers to clients, typically waiting in love hotel rooms.

The Japanese gravure idol (glamor model) industry is a competitive and overly populated place, with idols coming and going in quick succession.

In order to maintain their status, idols are required to keep up strong social media presences. This, of course, means Twitter and Instagram, but increasingly also YouTube. Gradols have to be YouTubers these days, too.

The coronavirus has made this more urgent than before as splashy shoots and meet-and-greet events are either not having or only in far reduced numbers, decreasing the potential for idols to earn fees. Perhaps feeling the pinch, Natsumi Hirajima (formerly of AKB48) launched her own channel in July this year, but was a victim of her own success: one bra demo video, which really showed off her incredible bust, went viral, only for it to get taken down (perhaps for being too revealing). The cops in Osaka have arrested a 62-year-old man for violations of prostitution laws after they found seven men and women naked in his home.

On the night of October 3, as widely reported in the Japanese media, police raided his home, where the man has been running an orgy party service for years.

The five men (aged between their thirties and fifties) and two women (in their thirties) were arrested for indecent exposure, though later released. No charges were reported against them.

The organizer, Yoshihiro Murakami, admits to the allegations against him. Men paid ¥15,000 to participate in the monthly parties that were held under the name of the Murasame-kai at Murakami’s home or at love hotels.

Murasame-kai even maintained a Twitter account, through which it made announcements and posted alluring images of the women participating in the parties. The picture used for this article is taken from the account, so it should give you a reasonable idea of what the events were like. Kinky!

The sex parties were organized through a strictly members-only system, whereby would-be participants were first interviewed.

Police first received a tip about the parties in late January. They have continued to take place even during the pandemic and Japan’s period of national emergency, when most public services were heavily scaled back. Well, an orgy is certainly one radical way to challenge social distancing.

Panchira fans will be disappointed with the new TV adaptation of Wandering Witch — The Journey of Elaina.

Based on the popular light novel series and its manga version, the anime is one of the highlights of the fall TV season in Japan. But its original creator wants to keep it clean and accessible to a range of age groups.

In an interview with anime magazine Newtype, Jougi Shiraishi talked about the conditions he set for the anime production.

“The only request I made was ‘Please do not, under any circumstances, show [the characters’] underwear.’ I’d like the series to keep a broad range of ages in its fanbase, and to be a show that people of a wide range of ages will watch. But what if you don’t want to go through an expensive service or institution? Social media can help you out, right?

Well, that’s what one woman in her thirties thought, reports the Asahi.

She searched Twitter for potential sperm donors and found a man who claimed to be a graduate of Kyoto University, one of the most prestigious in Japan.

He was also of the same blood type as her husband — blood types are seen as telling signs of your personality in Japan — and this clinched the deal.

She got his sperm and duly became pregnant in summer 2019. She remained in contact with the man, though, and, as these things do, inevitably the truth leaked out. He was a graduate of a much less prestigious university in regional Japan and was even born in China. He was, at least, an employee of a major corporation and in his twenties.

The woman was by now five months pregnant and could not abort. She gave birth in February this year.

The article does not say if he was actually Chinese, which we presume she would have realized when she met him, nor why she was searching for a sperm donor when she was married (her husband is sterile? He doesn’t want kids? She is a widow?).

“I would never have accepted his sperm if he was honest about his background,” the woman said. “I believe there is a need for a law to regulate dishonest donors.”

OK, but perhaps you should then pursue donation through a regular service, not Twitter?

A decline in the number of certified donor services has apparently led to people to search social media and seek out sperm donations from private individuals.

Artificial insemination by donors is also not available in Japan to single women or sexual minorities. It can only be used by couples where the husband has been diagnosed as infertile.

They say that television is fake and this story may not convince you otherwise.

Netizens have exposed the beautiful woman who is supposedly an instructor at the Uzumasa Driving School in Kyoto as a gravure model.

Top Japanese porn producer Soft on Demand has opened its mini theme park complex in Kabukicho, Tokyo, which, despite recent gentrification, remains one of the centers of the adult and sex industry.

As previously reported, SOD Land is five floors devoted to porn. Visitors can get food and drink served by actual adult video stars or sex workers in several different types of establishments.

Here are some pictures from when the site opened to the public on October 10. People were lining to get in, despite the pre-typhoon rainy weather.

For years it has been notoriously difficult to get hold of: the morning-after pill.

In Japan, for a woman to receive emergency contraception, she has to go to a doctor and get a prescription. And it’s expensive, too.

But women have been campaigning for years to remove the barriers blocking easy access to the morning-after pill, which is surely one of the reasons for so many shotgun weddings in Japan (including among many prominent celebrities). The current system is condemned as shaming and discriminatory, and is particularly a problem for victims of sexual assault, whose treatment by police is already often bad enough that they must also suffer an appointment and examination to receive emergency contraception.

Now, it seems, finally the politicians are listening. Or might be. According to media reports, the government is considering to ease restrictions and make the morning-after pill available without a prescription as early as next year.

A safer, low-dose form of oral contraceptive only became legal in Japan in 1999 after a decade of wrangling — notably after the male-dominated lawmakers got Viagra authorized in just six months. But the medical establishment has been notably reticent about allowing the morning-after pill to become more easily available, citing the potential “irresponsibility” of women (as opposed to the, er, responsibility of the men in Japan who have sex without condoms).

The vice president of the Japan Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists edified the masses on a morning TV show in the summer. “If we make the morning after pill more accessible, I’m worried that young women will think, ‘Oh, I can just use it again next time’ and not take it seriously.”

His now-notorious comments sparked fury among women and a backlash online. A petition calling for non-prescription sales of the drug has attracted tens of thousands of signatures.

Activists, who produced the guide in the image above, are asking for better sex education, full availability of other types of contraception in Japan, and the legalization of medical abortions.

For once, it appears that the government might be listening.

Female athletes will receive better protection against voyeuristic photography while competing, the Japanese Olympic Committee has said. Working in partnership with the Japan Sport Association and All Japan High School Athletic Federation, the JOC is preparing concrete steps to prevent exploitative photos being taken and shared of athletes.

Dressed in clothing designed to help them do their best in their competition, female sports athletes are easy prey for snappers, who can use a lens to zoom in on breasts and buttocks. Such images may then be shared online with offensive captions.

This is a problem not only faced by adult and professional athletes, but increasingly youngsters competing in student events.

Athletes have made complaints to the JOC over the issue.

“Right now there are no spectators in the stands most of the time (because of coronavirus restrictions) so I won’t hear cheering but I can focus because I don’t have to worry about being secretly photographed,” one athlete was quoted in a media report.

There is no law against nonconsensual filming and photographing in Japan, known as tosatsu, though there are local ordinances against “public nuisance” under which such acts may be punished.

The current law has a penalty for photography distributed without consent only if the images or video are nude or pornographic.

The Justice Ministry is currently considering making revisions to the law by adding on penal regulations for sexual offenses, such as by defining such nonconsensual images or video as an invasion of privacy.

From cyclists to swimmers, track and field athletes, and volleyball players, female athletes are adored by netizens in Japan, who spend hours scouring media images and television footage for sexually revealing shots.

This works both ways, of course: female sports athletes have exploited their popularity to pursue successful careers outside sport as models or even porn stars, such as the female boxer Riyako Goshi and snowboarder Mero Imai. Female beach volleyball player Miwa Asao, in particular, built up a huge fandom.
