Following the high-profile cancellation of the latest “Futomomo” thighs fetish exhibition, another exhibition has run afoul of Ikebukuro Marui department store this month.

Mixing photography and illustration, the annual Girls’ Love (yuri) (as opposed to Boys’ Love) fetish exhibition was set to run from March 17th to March 25th at the Ikebukuro branch of Marui. The “Yuri Exhibition” event has now been cancelled for reasons that are not yet fully clear. The organizers (who include subculture store Village Vanguard) claim that it has now become “difficult” for the exhibitors to display and sell their work. Quite what this actually means is the subject of speculation.

Marking the second such fetish event cancellation at the mainstream venue, people are now talking about possible censorship of subcultures and alternative tastes.

We suspect that, after the thighs show debacle, Marui looked at its event lineup for the month and beyond, and saw a photography exhibition featuring models in lesbian poses.

Yuria, the photographer behind the “Futomomo” series, was also scheduled to exhibit at the “Yuri Exhibition” with work featuring real-life models (yuri is usually illustration). At least three of the other exhibitors (Albina Albina, SAKUnoTORIDORI, Minori Takahashi) also likewise use models. The inclusion of this kind of exhibit may have appeared too overtly sexualized or troubling for venue.

Sadly, as Tokyo prepares for the Olympics in two years’ time, we expect to see more of this kind of latent censorship. Cool Japan only allows the alternative and non-mainstream in easily consumable portions and pigeonholed in certain places.

It’s a stereotype but there is some truth to it: a foreign male who’s below average can come to Japan and get himself an above-average lady, if not several (sometimes even at once). Incidentally, YouTuber TkyoSam recently got himself into hot water over a video he made in a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant after he put the GoPro camera on the conveyor belt and let it film its journey around the eatery. The video went viral but the restaurant was not amused, issuing a public apology. The resulting controversy has even made the television news, with some speculating that TkyoSam might face a serious fine or even a jail sentence. That sounds a bit harsh for breaching etiquette and hygiene basics. (He’s hardly the first to do this kind of stunt, of course.)

Anyway, that “notorious” video is no longer online but it’s how we stumbled upon his YouTube channel and his other, perhaps equally contentious videos like the above.

A survey by Himawari Life Insurance, ostensibly related to its breast cancer awareness efforts, asked 1,000 Japanese women (250 each in their twenties, thirties, forties, and fifties) about their breasts.

Asked to rate their own breasts on a scale of 1 to 100, the average was 46.1, which we find rather disappointing.

Even more unequivocal, however, was the response to the most important question in the survey: Do you like your breasts?

I like them: 4.8%

I kinda like them: 16.3%

I don’t like them very much: 25.5%

I don’t like them at all: 19%

I neither like nor dislike them: 34.4%

So almost no Japanese women actually like their breasts. Even when combining the first two positive or semi-positive responses, it still means that just 21.1% of Japanese woman think favorably about their breasts. That’s less than a quarter!

Is this mere modesty? Or are Japanese women aware of their rather small breast sizes, especially compared to more glamorous women in foreign countries? Well, there’s plenty of impressive busts among the ranks of gravure idols and adult video stars, but (sadly) they are hardly representative of the norm.

That being said, this is not just a matter of size, since respondents picked as their ideal bust cup sizes C, D, and B. Small cup sizes are still seen as cute and more practical in many ways (less pain, easier for doing sports, etc.). So it would seem that the women would rather don’t like other aspects about their breasts.

This then begs the question, what attributes would make the ideal breasts? Well, thankfully the survey also asked the women about this. Here were their responses.

“It’s only Japanese companies that now manufacture condoms as thin as 0.01-0.02mm,” said a spokesman from Sagami Rubber Industries, a leading Japanese condom maker. “We see (the Tokyo Games) as an extremely precious opportunity to let the world know about Japan’s high-technology.”

Debuting in 2013, Sagami’s 0.01mm condom helped boost sales of prophylactics. Japanese companies produced around 417 million condoms in 2016, the last year for which the industry has released figures. Major competitor Okamoto followed suit with its own 0.01mm sheath in 2015.

“We expect that our products will be highly valued at the (Tokyo) Olympics,” an Okamoto spokesman told AFP.

At this year’s Pyeongchang Games, organizers handed out a record 110,000 free condoms, and the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee told AFP they had no plans to break with the tradition.

“We are planning to provide condoms as one of the amenity items at the athlete’s village, although how many and which brands has yet to be decided,” a committee official said on condition of anonymity.

Sagami, of course, is delighted at the prospect of serving as official dispenser of condoms to the athletes.

“When Tokyo was selected to host the 2020 Olympics, condom distribution at the athlete village immediately came to our minds,” Sagami’s spokesman said. “The company worked hard to get the 0.01mm products to market well before the Tokyo Olympics.”

The big question, then, is: Will there be medals awarded for results in all these physical activities off the track?

Let’s just hope that the syphilis epidemic has calmed down in time for 2020.

But here’s a new development in the ongoing saga of chikan in Japan. Last week, someone was on the JR Musashino Line in Chiba Prefecture during the morning and snapped a picture of a fellow passenger blithely sporting a sticker on his back that announced that he was a regular practitioner of chikan.

The sticker said, in Japanese: “This person is groping people on the train every day.”

As if that wasn’t enough of a shocker, the man, seemingly unaware that he had been outed, is even shown in one image appearing to surreptitiously reach over to grope the butt of a woman next to him.

The person (female, it appears) then posted the image on Twitter under the account @Yammer_1. It went viral and was picked up some blogs (in Japanese and English), though the original tweet was subsequently removed, no doubt out of fear of a lawsuit for defamation or something.

The alleged groper is not identified, nor is his face shown. The other passengers seem unaware of the sticker or the groping that may be taking place.

The context for the image is a little dubious. Was it set up? Or was it just a prank? That is, someone with a strange sense of humor put the sticker on himself and rode the train to see what reactions it might provoke.

If someone went to the trouble of writing out a sticker and then putting it on the man to warn others, why not rather wait to catch him in the act and then take him to the authorities? It seems like a strangely roundabout way of pursuing justice.

Incidentally, not so long ago there was another anti-chikan sticker initiative whereby a woman who suspects she is being groped can show the sticker as a warning to the perpetrator. If he fails to comply, she can peel the sticker to reveal a red cross stamp, which she can then brand the groper with.

No sooner than we have posted one article about a Japanese man exposed as a serial molester of women on trains near Tokyo, then along comes another case.

A video has appeared online allegedly showing a foreign man in the act of molesting a Japanese woman from behind while riding a train in central Tokyo.

The unidentified foreign male, who seem to be in his forties or fifties, is shown seemingly pushing himself up against the buttocks of the woman on a relatively crowded JR Yamanote train.

If we understand the context right, the person shooting the video apparently had already suffered his advances herself and then starting filming his behavior on her phone. She then confronts the man, who is annoyed but not alarmed by being “caught.” He then gets off the train.

Okay, we’re going to be very, very careful here. We CANNOT verify this video and we are NOT saying the man is committing a crime. We do not have the evidence to make such an accusation, though the video does suggest that this is chikan.

We are essentially only reporting what other people are saying, both the original uploader of the video by Billy Ho on Facebook last week and a subsequent posting on Nextshark.

The video has been viewed over 160,000 times as of writing.

We mainly want to share this video to spread information about chikan culture and how prevalent it is — and that today it is very easy to get caught and filmed.

Ever wondered what it’s like to do a nude photo shoot? We all love the results but how are those sensual images created? What’s the process? How many people are involved? And how much do models earn?

Well, the truth is a little more banal than you might expect. Often there aren’t even any real locations, just a studio and a minimal crew — and a model willing to drop their towel for a few hours.

A Japanese TV show recently went behind the scenes at a nude photo shoot. Here are some highlights.

The 29-year-old female model was Ai Kumamoto, a relatively little-known model but apparently she often poses for such shoots. She doesn’t earn as much as you might expect, though, since she’s not a major name.

For shooting around 400 images in two and a half hours with no clothes on for much of the time, the model said she earns the grand sum of ¥25,000 (about $230), which is not so dissimilar to what the female “extras” earn in large-scale porn shoots involving multiple women who are not stars.

Naturally, famous models and idols earn much higher sums for the high-profile “hair nude” photo books and shoots, though they are relatively few and far between these days.

If you like Japanese schoolgirl porn — that is Japanese adult video with a schoolgirl theme, though performers will be above legal age — then you may well know that Japanese porn titles often use euphemisms to describe this subgenre.

The Japanese word “joshi kosei” means “high school girl” but by writing the third with a different kanji (女子校生, rather than 女子高生), it was possible to hide the “high” part and just make it look like female students without a specific age — even more useful if you also wanted to hint that the students are younger than high school age.

The leading Japanese male porn actor (and fucker of a thousand women) Shimiken recently tweeted that censorship is leading to the disappearance of this euphemism. “JK,” written in the Roman alphabet, is also no longer allowed because of the pressure on so-called “JK business” prostitution.

He notes that a whole new term has appeared: seifuku bishojo (制服美少女), or “beautiful girl in a uniform.”

Will this prove popular and help the schoolgirl AV genre survive? In fact, the term is already in use. A quick search on DMM revealed over 100 titles that use the phrase.

We’ve seen similar trends before, such as camouflaging “junior idol” and the like behind other phrases and euphemisms when the moral climate of the times does not allow for that content. You can disguise things and hide them from view, but whenever there’s demand, the producers will always find a way of meeting the needs of the market. It’s ultimately economics, not morals.

Here’s a story that likely won’t do any favors for the reputations of either gaijin or Asian women.

We stumbled upon the tale of the American Mixed Martial Arts fighter Jaymes Schulte, who allegedly made secret videos of his one-night stands with many Asian women.

Apparently he then uploaded his sex tapes to a now-defunct Pornhub channel called TravelPorn where he charged viewers $10 for uncensored videos or $250 for a lifetime membership. He accumulated 3,000 subscribers and 800,000 views.

The Mixed Martial Arts lightweight fighter (nicknamed “Underdog”) in his early thirties says he “bangs more than 100 girls every year without spending money.” He has been traveling around Asian in pursuit of Asia women, including Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, and Japanese, among at least the 36 women in his online videos. His conquests were achieved in Taiwan, Hawaii, Japan, China, Indonesia, and Thailand. He documented his glamorous romantic escapes on his Instagram account.

Eventually, netizens took notice. Taiwanese people have been denouncing him on Facebook, which led to the adverse publicity and the end of his Pornhub channel and Instagram account. Schulte claimed that all the women in his videos gave their consent to being filmed and uploaded, and this is the significant point for his detractors, it seems, because it may not be true.

One story particularly caught our eye. Schulte claims to have had sex with a Japanese woman in Hawaii while she was there vacationing with her boyfriend. When the latter found out and was none too pleased, the woman apparently switched her story to rape. Schulte was taken into custody but quickly won his liberty (luckily for Asian women!) by showing the detectives his sex tape with their consensual session (and the boyfriend calling the woman during it). The angry boyfriend, understandably, wanted Schulte to delete the video but he demanded $1,000, which he says he received but still did not delete the video.

While his sexual career with Asian women is impressive, Schulte’s MMA track record is less so, notching up only two wins and four losses. Still, that’s two wins more than we’ve ever achieved and he has plenty of other achievements to boast about, no doubt.

Yes, lo and behold — look closer at one shot and you can spot a man in the background sitting next to the model in her bed, and in another shot you can see the hungry hand of the man behind the camera, groping her modest breasts. This is not nude selfie territory, but plain old nude photography — and what a difference it makes.

The nude shots taken at a hotel are also nice but we prefer the regular ones from her home, when it feels like you are intruding on her private lair.

One of the things that never ceases to amuse and amaze us is the sheer bravado of Japanese adult toys when it comes to picking subjects to parody.

Satire and emulation is a very strong part of the industry and we’ve seen some fun ones. Much of the time parody onaholes are catering to an esoteric crowd, based on a character from a slightly obscure eroge, manga, anime, or light novel.
