Election broadcasts are a bit of a circus in Japan. Legally, the public broadcaster NHK is obliged to show them and this is why so many fringe and wacky candidates ultimately pay to stand for election, because it means they’re guaranteed several minutes of fame.

This year is particularly strange with the July election for Tokyo governor, since there are so many candidates (but only two or three serious ones). Already, the “poster hijacks” by the NHK Party, which has sold its candidates’ slots to anyone willing to pay, have generated lots of attention, as have the nude images of a woman on Yusuke Kawai’s posters that police ordered to be removed.

One of the best things about these NHK broadcasts is watching the sign language interpreter behind them trying their best to replicate the weirdness from the candidate.

But how do you interpret Airi Uchino’s broadcast, in which the wannabe governor of Tokyo stripped naked?!

In the end, though she took her shirt off, Airi Uchino’s modesty was protected by the name plate on the table and by the strapless clothing she was wearing underneath, so this was arguably false advertising (from a politician! Shocking!) or bait and switch.

Mikami has reacted with spunk, calling the criticism “discrimination” and telling people to “take responsibilities for your words.” She has submitted a disclosure request to identify the users, presumably so she can then take legal action against them for slander and obstruction of her business interests (or perhaps she just hopes to shame the critics by exposing their real names).

As unpleasant as some of the comments were, there is no hiding the fact that Mikami used to be a porn star — a fact that she certainly does not conceal herself — and that certain people may have a negative opinion about such a person modeling for a fashion brand. That is literally a form discrimination in that it is making a distinction between two types of people, but may be inevitable to some extent.

And we suspect it is not possible to sue people for just having and expressing such an opinion.

Yesterday, we wrote about the backlash Yua Mikami has faced as she tries to move beyond her former porn career and establish herself as a mainstream fashion brand producer.

The “afterlives” of gravure and JAV idols is a perennial topic on this blog, as regular readers will know.

What happens to those lovely ladies after they disappear from our lives? Mikami enjoyed a hugely successful career and her retirement from AV was fully planned, but most idols just fade away with a whimper, pushed out in a highly competitive market. And which means we rarely get to hear what they do next. (Spoiler: we reckon a lot, especially in porn, go into compensated dating, hostessing, or even straight prostitution, where the money is actually better.)

We recently came across an interview with former gradol Saori Yamamoto, who made her debut in 2002 at the age of 16.

With her busty body and winning smile, Yamamoto began to do well, but her career unraveled when a weekly tabloid published a scoop in 2011 about her on a date with her soccer player boyfriend.

It was prohibited by agencies for gravure idols to have boyfriends. (Today, the situation is less severe, though having a public relationship will likely impact your career prospects.)

She was offered an ultimatum by her agency’s CEO: she could either pay ¥20 million to cover her agency’s lost earnings (agencies typically pay their talent a fixed salary in Japan and pocket the majorities of the fees earned by the talent) or break up with her boyfriend and work another three years. The CEO essentially locked her up in the agency office at night and tried to gaslight her.

Eventually, diagnosed with anxiety disorder, Yamamoto quit the industry.

In 2012, she was sued by her agency’s CEO for lost earnings and damages.

At age 25, she shifted into working as a hostess and became a success. Having only ever earned a measly ¥100,000 a month as a gravure idol (because the agency had taken the rest), she now found herself earning ¥1 million a month.

If that sounds like a happy ending, it’s not. She had to channel most of this new cash into legal fees.

The first two rulings were in favor of her ex-boss and she had to pay a modest ¥330,000 to him (in general, damages rewarded in Japanese legal cases are small). After she had finished paying her lawyers, she was left with just ¥80,000 in her bank account.

What happened with the soccer player, you might ask. Well, they got married in 2012 but divorced the following year.

After dabbling in flower arrangement, Yamamoto decided to use her experience to become a consultant offering advice on relationships and marriage.

She launched a business in 2016. It didn’t go well at first and she soon used up her initial loan on making a website and renting an office.

Things picked up when Yamamoto started a blog and played on her past, offering “consultancy tickets” about “how to date a beautiful woman.” People who knew her gravure past began to come.

In 2018, Yamamoto remarried. Her business is today thriving, making ¥60 million in sales a year through seminars, business support for female entrepreneurs, and other services. At 38, Yamamoto is that rare thing among ex-gradols: a successful and independent business leader.

And she is also arguably even more beautiful than she was at the height of her gravure career.

There was a wondrous time back in the 1990s and early 2000s when the hair nude (full-frontal nude shoot) was commonplace. Hardly a week went by without another female celebrity shedding her clothes and trying to get in on the action, from newbies to more established stars, all trying to emulate the incredible success of photo books like Santa Fe with Rie Miyazawa.

That said, it’s a different kind of marketplace to the 1990s, and print books don’t sell as well as they used to, making publishers more risk-averse.

It’s not the first time that we have speculated about a revival of the hair nude genre (a bevy of summer releases last year prompted us to say much the same). Let’s hope Biru Otsuka does more of this and inspires others to follow suit.

The former figure skater Miki Ando has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with her 16-year-old male protégé after a tabloid snapped them out together on a date.

The 36-year-old Ando, a two-time former world champion, famously left the figure skating world in the early 2010s to raise her child as a single mom and, despite intense media speculation, never named the father. (It is rumored to be a foreign skater or couch.)

Bunshun published allegations on June 26 that Ando was unnaturally close to her student, even going to Universal Studios Japan with him and his mother. When the latter was away for a moment, the pair would quickly hold hands. They were also spotted with their arms around each other’s waists.

Ando has denied a romantic relationship, but a further report has emerged.

Weekly Women’s Prime published an allegation on July 1 that Ando would frequently enter the men’s changing room to talk to her her student. Ando has not denied this, explaining that mothers and other couches often did this.

Nonetheless, it will only swell the rumors that she is either grooming the young man or already in a romantic relationship with him.

Long a target of the tabloids, Ando has reacted with her customary honesty to the current controversy, posting in English on social media on June 25: “I can’t take it anymore. I feel really burned out.”

Personally, our take is that if the young man is willing, what’s the issue? The age of consent is 16 and Ando is an attractive woman still only in her thirties. Professionally, of course, it gets very complicated if the couch and skater have a relationship that goes beyond the rink, but we certainly won’t be condemning Ando until we hear the young man’s side of the story.

The actress Kokone Sasaki, perhaps best known for her willingness to do extensive nude sex scenes in her career and for her nude photo shoots, has announced her marriage.

Sasaki is now 34 and shared the news with fans last week on social media that she has married fellow actor Yusuke Kano, who is 38.

Most are located in clusters near major commercial areas, sometimes forming significant areas almost entirely filled with love hotels. The most famous in Tokyo are Dogenzaka in Shibuya, Kabukicho-Okubo in Shibujuku, Gotanda in Shinagawa, and Uguisudani in Ueno.

Being another big station with lots of shops and restaurants, Ikebukuro also has quite a few, most prominently on the westward side of the station.

In Osaka, most hotels are found in the Nipponbashi part of Namba, in the south of the city, or places like Kyobashi or Tennoji.

Outside urban areas, hotels are often found near highways and other major roads. Though some of hotels in cities are garish and themed, or have gimmicky facilities like special beds or water slides, the bizarre and architecturally adventurous features that have made love hotels famous are actually usually found out in the provinces or suburbs.

The gravure idol and actor Asuka Kishi has returned to the pages of Weekly Playboy for the first time in six years.

The 33-year-old Asuka Kishi has focused more on acting roles of late, landing a number of credits in TV dramas. Known for her H cup, she made her debut in 2012. Her last print photo book was Culmination, which came out in 2022.

The mini-comeback shoot appears in the Weekly Playboy issue that went on sale on October 7. A digital photo book is also now on sale.

It’s not the cover shoot — that honor goes to Mizuho Habu, formerly of Sakurazaka46 — but it’s one of the main shoots in the issue, which also features a mega-shoot with 58 gravure models (to mark the magazine’s 58th anniversary). They have done similar shoots on previous anniversaries, as covered here. They must cost a lot of money to do.

Fortunately, we don’t have to search and identify all the lovely ladies ourselves. Weekly Playboy provided a list of who’s included in the anniversary shoot. It’s a veritable who’s who of current biggies in the gravure industry.

We recently wrote about an inventive porn parody of a long-running horror movie franchise.

Sometimes these parodies go beyond the cheeky and amusing, and are brazen or even legally dubious. A porn parodying the DJ Soda groping incident was ultimately pulled from release after an outcry.

The Japanese adult video industry’s latest target for parody is the popular manga and anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, a franchise that is also increasingly famous overseas.

Called Premature Ejaculation Free Rental Pussy (早漏のフリーレンタルマ〇コ), which in Japanese is read similar to Frieren’s full title (葬送のフリーレン), the production (RKI00690) comes out on November 8 from Rookie, a major JAV label. From what we can tell, it’s a streaming-only release, so don’t expect any DVDs to float around the secondhand market.

It’s directed by industry veteran Dragon Nishikawa and stars Monaka Sengoku and Hikaru Minazuki.

The characters are very clearly modeled on the mages Frieren and Fern from the fantasy series, from the costumes to the wigs, props, and elven ears.

The plot for the 150-minute release looks like a threesome setup where one lucky guy who comes too soon gets to experience sex with two lovely female mages.

Way back in March last year, we wrote a brief write-up about Akari Fukunaga’s nude sex scenes in the movie Hand (2022).

It’s a literary pink (sexploitation) film, based on a novel and part of Nikkatsu’s revived Roman Porno series.

We’ve finally got around to taking a closer look at the film and we’re glad we did, because it contains several more sex scenes, including one with former musician Natsuko Obuchi.

The titular hand is Akari Fukunaga’s as she masturbates with a sex toy.

There’s a great sex scene in which she and her lover start having sex on a sofa. He sucks her small Japanese tits. Then he slips his pants off and lies on her floor while she rides him. He reaches up to pinch her nipples.

In another, surprisingly intimate and realistic scene, she lies naked in bed with her lover while he fingers her to orgasm.

Fingering is a bit of a running theme in the film.

But there is also kinkier stuff here, like the guy who licks her naked foot in a karaoke booth. They then fuck on the couch.

Natsuko Obuchi’s sex scene is quite nice, involving her on her back and then riding her lover on a hotel bed.
