The adult industry in Japan has responded to the coronavirus pandemic in various ways, though this has mainly involved sections of the industry like the hostess/host clubs and call girls services.

The former have sanitized their facilities and worked with the government to conduct testing and improve their tarnished reputations. The latter have offered special pandemic discounts in the hopes that all this stress is making people horny. In general, though, hostess clubs and sex workers are really struggling.

Soft on Demand quickly launched a big campaign offering free porn streaming to help people complying with the stay-at-home request.

So far, the reaction of the adult toy makers, though, has been muted, since it takes a while to design and make new products.

Now we are starting to see some of the responses and they were worth the wait. No surprises, then, that they come from Tama Toys, which tends to lead the field in parodic and provocative adult toys in Japan.

We are avoiding beaches and public pools right now, given the ongoing coronavirus infection rate, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking about swimsuits.

And to show just how far things have come, we wanted to share with you an image from 1966 (Showa 41), which we spotted shared on Twitter.

It’s an advertisement for “beach-ready” ladies in their colorful swimsuits. “Which is your pattern?” the main copy asks.

All the women model different styles of swimwear, each aimed at a respective kind of personality (from the “white skin” type to the “junior type” or “bad girl type,” and so on). The eight women are actresses contracted to the major studios at the time (Toho, Nikkatsu, etc.) — this being a time when the studio system was still strong in Japan, though the rise of pink eiga soft-core porn and the New Wave of independent filmmakers was undermining it. The women on the far right, Akemi Higashiyama, is credited as Crown Records because she is also a singer.

Is this the future of kissing between couples in the age of the coronavirus?

A playful picture recently shared on Twitter by the idol and mangaka Rin Kaname (of Dempagumi.inc) hints at what kissing might become if things don’t improve some day soonish.

The photo shows two people — in this case, two attractive Japanese women in their underwear — kissing through a see-through plastic wall. The image is captioned “social distance kiss.” One of the women is, we presume, Kaname herself, though please help us out if you can identify either of them more accurately.

The image was posted by Kaname to her 147,000+ followers on August 4 and has generated 7,500 likes and counting.

Of course, we exaggerate a bit. But the image does expose the paradox of social-distanced kissing: an act that requires intimacy cannot be done by half measures.

But experts have already advised against “deep kissing” during sex and hostesses, whose whole schtick is selling a kind of intimacy, are having to wear special masks and clubs are closing or going to extreme lengths to sterilize.

We have yet to see reliable stats, not least because it’s a shadowy industry, but we are sure that prostitution is really suffering. Porn should, in theory, be booming, because people are stuck more at home with fewer outlets for their horniness (or even doing stuff in general), hence the explosion of demand when a major online porn sale was announced. But we wonder if the number of porn productions are notably down from those in a regular year.

As entertainers are continuing to work, filming things and so on, and coming into contact with a lot of people in the process, coronavirus infections are also disproportionately affecting the industry.

In recent days, several high-profile cases have appeared.

In early August, the busty gravure idol Jun Amaki announced on Twitter that has contracted the virus. She then spent a couple of weeks recovering at home and last week said that she had recovered. By chance, the weekly magazine Playboy featured a shoot (pictured below) with her in its issue released that week.

And then came news last week that former Keyakizaka46 member Yui Imaizumi, soon after the 21-year-old appeared on TV demonstrating a busty way to keep a man’s attention in an online drinking party. She is currently recovering at home.

And it was also announced last week that AKB48’s Shizuka Oya tested positive for the coronavirus. Needless to say, groups like AKB48 that are rooted in a USP as “the idols you can meet” are going to struggle in the post-COVID age when mass handshaking events are surely not going to happen or, even if they are held, will scare fans off.

Finally, for now, the other high-profile infection announced last week was one of our favorites: Fumika Baba.

Train station toilets can be unpleasant places and may not even be suitable for answering a call of nature. The multipurpose toilets are, of course, wheelchair-accessible. No doubt they were attempting to make it seem like a couple was using the toilet for a tryst, and then filming the surroundings to see what reaction of passersby. The couple, though, was actually two men aged 26 and 23, who have not been named in media reports, and were intentionally referencing the Watabe adultery scandal.

They admit to the charges and have apologized. “We just wanted to get more hits.”

They entered the station on the afternoon of June 25, which police are treating as “trespassing,” and set up the audio in the toilet (loud enough to be heard outside) and then a camera to film the reactions with a tripod.

Someone passing by did indeed hear the moaning but, far from being amused, simply went and told a member of the station staff, who then apparently caught the YouTubers. The video the jokers shot was never released.

It reminds us another prank when motorists in Jakarta were treated to a dose of Japanese porn on a large advertising screen, courtesy of a hacker (who was later arrested for his efforts).

Just yesterday on these digital pages, we recalled the Ken Watabe adultery scandal that allegedly took place for the most part inside a multipurpose toilet in Roppongi.

We blogged about the two intrepid YouTubers who, in search of viral success, got themselves arrested and indicted after they tried to film passersby’s reactions to sex sounds coming from a train station multipurpose toilet.
