If you’re a young woman in Japan, especially in a big city like Tokyo, and you ride the train regularly, the chances are you have encountered the problem of chikan, or groping. Schoolgirls are frequent targets, probably because of their obvious sexual appeal to certain men but also because their youth means they are more likely to be too scared to do anything when groped in public.

Train carriages carry plenty of warnings about chikan, usually in the form of stickers or posters, ostensibly aimed at the perpetrators and witnesses. But what about publicity for victims or potential victims?

It seems that these exist but their message might not always be what you expect.

As reported elsewhere, one example recently went viral in Japan because it criticizes schoolgirls in Japan as causing or exasperating chikan.

The poster message reads: “The short skirt that you think is kawaii leads to sex crimes. And it’s not just you, but your friends and companions too.”

Incredibly, the poster was apparently made by Kanko, the largest school uniform manufacturer in Japan and put on display at several schools around the country (presumably with approval by the schools and education boards) until the controversy broke. The posters were recalled on January 15th and the company issued an apology.

This is not a new attitude per se — it’s merely a version of the “she was asking for it” criticism leveled at rape and sexual assault victims who happen to be attractive or dressed in a certain way — and, rather worryingly, even this poster originally dates back to 2012 and a crime prevention campaign at schools led by police.

Many have expressed shock at the victim-blaming approach of the poster, while others have noted that its efforts to encourage schoolgirls to reduce their potential to become a target as realistic.

And so the pre-Olympic crackdown continues.

After earlier initiatives outside Tokyo, we reported in November 2017 on the decision by the convenience store chain Ministop to stop selling pornographic magazines.

Well, the sentiment is spreading and one of the largest chains in the country, Lawson, announced on January 21st that its 14,574 branches nationwide would in principle cease sales of adult magazines by the end of August.

Until now, it was up to affiliates in the franchise whether or not they sold porn magazines, which typically are available in most conbinis among the rack of other types of magazines. But now the Lawson HQ has made it an explicit recommendation to stop selling adult magazines, which branches are pretty certain to follow.

The 231 branches of Lawson in Okinawa has already stopped offering such materials since November 2017 and, after apparent “success” and “understanding” from customers, the chain is now rolling this out to the rest of the country.

The photo book was shot over seven days in New York last September.

Following a series of successful photo books by Nogizaka46 and Keyakizaka46 idols, not least Mai Shirase, but less glory by the ladies of AKB48, twenty-two-year-old Erika Ikuta’s second photo book came out from Kodansha on January 22nd and immediately sold out. An extra 50,000 copies have been printed. It had already attracted more reservations than its initial 200,000 print run, leading the publisher to print an extra 20,000 to cope with the early demand.

Just for some context, this is an industry where sales of 10,000 are usually counted as a hit for a photo book.

Asian Boss, who previously gave us great interviews with former porn stars Emiri Okazaki and Taka Kato, has posted an interview with Yuta Shinohara.

The South Korean movie Burning came out in 2017, starring the lovely Jong-seo Jun (aka Jeon Jong-seo) alongside Steven Yeun and Yoo Ah-in.

In the Oscar-nominated thriller, which is based on a Haruki Murakami short story, the 24-year-old Jong-seo Jun is nude in two scenes, including quite a nice sex scene when she is lying down and revealing her cute Asian breasts. Iconiq first burst onto the scene in 2010 when she came out of nowhere to front a major advertising campaign for a beauty brand. Her cropped hair and stunning complexion immediately made her a household name in Japan.

We are late to the party with sharing this but we just spotted an interview that prolific YouTuber Nobita did with Japanese porn star Roku Kuroi (黒居ろく).

Posted back in December last year, the interview, which is subtitled in English and Chinese, is provocatively called “Why This Japanese Girl Chose to Become a Porn Star.” The content, though, is not sensational but actually quite sensitive and insightful.

In the video, Kuroi, who is also a cosplayer, explains the difficult circumstances that led up to her becoming an adult video star. “When I appeared in porn for the first time, I thought this job was the perfect match for me.”

She talks about her past dealing with bullying at school and work (as a nurse), which made her vulnerable and with low self-esteem. She actually starts to cry midway through the interview as she recalls all this trauma. Kuroi is also very honest about her relationship with her family, who have begged her to quit her job as a porn performer. “I thought they’d completely disown me.” She has since tried to quit the industry but found it impossible to get a regular job.

Going back to porn gave her a boost. “I was actually so glad that I’m still in demand… The fact that [people wanted me to appear in porn] gave me a purpose in life.”

Nobita says he has lots more material from his interview with Roku Kuroi, which he may turn into further videos in the future.

The 27-year-old Roku Kuroi debuted in 2016 and is also known professionally as Nana Asahi (あさひ奈々), Mone Kamiki (神木百音), and Ikumi Kuroki (黒木いくみ).

One of two women arrested for stealing over ¥30 million in Kabukicho, Tokyo’s major red-light district, had a secret porn past.

Nana Nishikawa (25) and Serina Nagano (22) formed the pair, nicknamed “Reiwa Cat’s Eye” after the current era and 1980s manga by Tsukasa Hojo about female thieves. The gang was pursued by Shinjuku police, who had their images from security camera footage in the area.

In December 2019, it was reported that 61-year-old Japanese politician Yasuhiro Ozata (小里泰弘) was asked to pay a “break-up fee” (solatium) by a much-younger woman with whom he was having an affair.

The Liberal Democratic Party member of the House of Representatives and former Cabinet minister allegedly paid Yuno Morita (森田由乃) ¥100,000 per night during their relationship. They became acquainted through a members-only club where she worked in Roppongi three years ago. They would subsequently meet as often as three times a month at a hotel — high-end, naturally, not some grubby love hotel. Even when they just met for dinner, she would still received about half her regular fee.

Their relationship is an example of what is known as “papa-katsu” in Japanese, “daddy life” or, more simply, having a sugar daddy. It is an upmarket version of enjoy kosai, or compensated dating.

Morita asked for ¥3 million when the relationship ended.

After the story broke, ushering in a minor scandal, she decided to milk things further. What does she have to lose? Morita appeared in a video interview with none other than Sari Kato, who knows more than a thing or two about getting her way with wealthy men.

Slightly more peculiar was the bizarre music video she released about the affair, including a guest appearance by Kato, where she raps about the “truth” behind the incident.

Morita has since posed for a gravure shoot in tabloid weekly Friday. The shoot is semi-nude, with her modesty preserved by the classic tebura “hand bra” pose so beloved by idols.

The shoot really shows off her beauty back, full lips, and slender legs. Quite a stunner.

As regular readers will know, Shimiken is the most prolific and hard-working male adult video performer in Japan. There are actually only a handful of such male stars in the industry and his services are called upon daily for shoots with the biggest and best ladies in AV.

He married Haruka Ito in 2019, as we reported at the time (it is, we should note, a common-law marriage). Writer and blogger Haruka Ito (aka Hachu) is a kind of celebrity in her own right as someone who exposed harassment at Dentsu, the biggest advertising agent in Japan. She and Shimiken now have a child, born in September last year.

In her interview with Nobita, which has English subtitles, she discusses how she first heard about Shimiken and met him through social media, the fact that she liked Shimiken’s short stature and his habit of telling dirty jokes, and her hopes of raising awareness in Japan of other types of marriage (like common-law marriage).

Of course, the big question for someone like Hachu is how she can handle the situation whereby her husband’s job is having sex with other women. She is frank about this, too, confessing it took her two years to cope with it mentally and she would wake up in the middle of the night crying.
