Japanese TV is rarely a place to go for quality viewing. But it can be a destination for outlandish fun on a regular basis.

We were tempted to have Nichole Bloom but, given the fact that she is American and doesn’t do anything in Japan as far as we are aware, we respectfully excluded her.

Of course, there were plenty of other possibilities. The Okinawan actress Hikari Mitsushima is a “quarter.”

And then there are the gray areas. The model Yuria Kushido often looks like a haafu but is, from what we can tell, “only” Japanese. Anne Nakamura is another model frequently “suspected” as a haafu but actually not so. Of course, that doesn’t make her any less or more lovely than she already is!

It’s often regarded as axiomatic that adultery is common in Japan. Men have sex at their fingertips. Just take a trip to one of the countless “fuzoku” sex services available or go on a “compensated date.”

The ladies are catching up, though, if you believe that is the reason for the growth of Ashley Madison in Japan.

One Japanese survey, at least, suggests that adultery is really not as gender-biased as you might think. In fact, slightly more women admitted to cheating on their partner in the past.

The survey was conducted, somewhat bizarrely, by a hair-removal salon with coupes aged between 20 and 49 about infidelity.

Here is how one English-language blog summarized the results.

531 responses were collected, with 19.6% admitting to having cheated. The faithful/unfaithful ratio was pretty even between the sexes, with 19.2% of men saying they’d cheated in the past and only slightly more women, 20%, revealing the same.

However, this doesn’t tell the whole story, since there is a major difference in genders in terms of when they think it’s fine to cheat on a partner. Only a small number of the women did so after they had got married, while the men did not see this as an obstacle to satisfying their urges.

Among married respondents, 38.5% of men had had an extramarital affair, more than twice as many as the 18.1% figure for married women. The women, however, were more likely to cheat as long as they didn’t have a ring on their finger, as 21.7% had been playing around behind their boyfriend’s back, compared to 12.9% of the single men who’d cheated on their girlfriends.

The ages when men or women cheated also diverged, with single men in their twenties the most likely, though followed closely by married men in their forties.

The numbers were modest for married women in their twenties, but doubled with such women in their twenties and only slightly decreased for women in their forties. And then among unmarried women, it was a similar story for those in their twenties, yet the ratio was almost four times higher for unmarried women in their forties. The percentages for unmarried men also increased with age but not as extreme a jump.

So what’s the lesson to be taken from all this? If you’re lucky enough to be dating a Japanese lady in her forties, be prepared that she may still be playing the field!

When Eightman Production announced the major debut of a new porn star in January 2019 and teased fans that it was a former idol, it didn’t take studious netizens long to identify the lady in question.

Though the PR boasted that the lady in question was an idol who has appeared on TV variety shows, released a photo book, and done a stint as a regular gravure idol, the truth did not quite live up to the hype.

Some speculated, without much actual hope, that it might be 19-year-old Manaka Shida, who has just announced her graduation from Keyakizaka46. Now THAT would be a development worthy of a blog post here. No, the truth is a little more mundane.

The debutant has been outed as Tina Nanami, a former chika (underground) idol in Nagoya who was apparently fired (what did she do to justify that?!).

To be fair, Nanami is not a big star (yet), so this is not such a major event as when certain former idols from AKB48 or SKE48 have made their AV debuts.

It’s also another sign of the partial dishonesty of Japanese porn producers when it comes to promoting their releases as actress “debuts.” After all, Tina Nanami already released her first nude “image video” in June this year — titled, without much originality, “First Nude” — and posed for a hair nude full-frontal shoot to accompany it.

So while January may well bring Nanami’s very welcome debut in porn, it’s not quite as a groundbreaking a change in her circumstances as the marketing suggests. That being said, we look forward to watching the fine work Eightman Production will certainly do.

Have you ever seen those outdoor shots in Japanese adult video and wondered where they are in real life?

While a lot of AV is shot in studios and rented hotel rooms, the street shots are done for real (probably without a permit?), though with revealing names (like an actual university’s) blurred out.

Using Google Street View, some diligent netizens in Japan have tracked down a few of the real-world locations in Tokyo that were used in certain porn releases. It makes for an oddly satisfying experience to identify them, especially if you are familiar with the place.

At times, of course, it’s not a big surprise, because there are often clues in the AV itself.

In this release, “Shiori” was meant to be a third-year college student from “O University.” No shock, then, that the actual location was Ochonomizu University, a women’s college in central Tokyo.

Here are some other examples that required more sleuthing, though not on our parts. This recently released series by Prestige Premium was easier because they are all based on the premise of traveling around in a truck and picking up Japanese female university students at private colleges, so you can already narrow down the search to certain areas based on assumptions of location choices.

The tebura or “hand bra” is a frequent trope in gravure. What can be more alluring, it seems, than an idol or model covering her breasts with just her bare hands?

The model and actress Kiko Mizuhara has posed for an alluring cover shoot for the latest issue of German magazine 032c, an English-language, biannual contemporary culture magazine based in Berlin.

This time it’s a survey by the Japanese Association for Sex Education, using 2017 data collected from Japanese college and university students that has been (no doubt selectively) parsed to produce a clickbaity sensational find.

We first stumbled upon this in English on SoraNews24, though the original source is the Japanese news.

Yes, most colleges kids are still virgins.

Well, college starts at 18 (same age as the lovely Nana Asakawa, pictured above), so is it a particular shock? Let’s take a look at some of the details here…

A total of 13,000 responses were collected, and when sorted by age, the researchers found that roughly 30% of college students have never gone on a date, with just 71.8% of college men and 69.3 percent of college women saying they’ve been on a romantic outing. These were the lowest numbers ever recorded in the survey, which was first done in 1974. The new lows are down more than 10 percent from the peak for each sex, which were 81.9% for men in 1999 and 82.4% for women in 2005.

Thirty percent of college students have never gone on a date. We’re not sure if that’s surprising or not. We certainly weren’t among that number, back in the day, but of course, there are also different definitions of “date.”

Here’s a breakdown of some of the data.

College men who have kissed:
2005: 73.7%
2011: 65.6%
2017: 59.1%

College women who have kissed:
2005: 73.5%
2011: 62.2%
2017: 54.3%

And the data for students who have actually had sex, there were similar drops compared to their peaks in 2005.

Though this is a decline, it’s still overall a rise if you go back to the first surveys done in the mid-1970s, when less college men and women had kissed or had sex compared to today. So is this just a temporary blip of sexlessness in Japanese history?

Japanese television unwittingly gave air time to a popular porn star when it was interviewing people about the recent SoftBank network outrage that left users in Tokyo completely without phone connections for several hours.

While not named in the interviews, Momo Sakura was one of the people the cameras spoke to about their experience dealing with the blackout. Sakura was filmed at a train station complaining about her inability to use Line or make calls.

You have give credit where credit’s due. Japanese netizens really know their stuff when it comes to identifying AV idols, even when there is just a few seconds of footage to go by.

Though not completely taboo as a subject, the mainstream media frequently refers to adult video performers euphemistically as “sexy actresses.”

While we can’t all retain the same encyclopaedic knowledge banks as Japanese AV fans, it’s worth bearing in mind that those random people who appear in (wo)man-on-the-street-style TV news interviews may well have a very interesting (and sexy) life.
