Asian Boss recently landed a video interview with former Japanese adult video star Emiri Okazaki.

The video has proved a hit, notching up over 3.5 million views in just a few days at time of writing.

As video host Kei notes, Japan is known for a handful things, including anime and porn. But why is porn so big here? And what is like to work in the industry?

The 18-minute interview is in Japanese but has English subtitles throughout. Emiri Okazaki, whose five-year AV stint began in 2011, discusses her career and thoughts on working as a porn star.

The kinds of women who go into AV are varied, Okazaki says, including college graduates, prostitutes, hostesses, and even those from affluent backgrounds. She says that her entry into the industry primarily came from frustration at trying to pursue a mainstream modeling or acting career when she was in her early twenties.

She also shares some of the secrets about becoming a male porn actor in Japan.

Since leaving the industry, Okazaki has started her own cosmetics brand. Given all the recent controversy about JAV stars and coercion, an interview with a former performer about her experiences and hardships is very timely.

A survey set out to discover at what age Japanese women have their first kiss.

The results, taken from 2,350 women polled online, show disparity between different ages and prefectures.

The oldest average ages were in Nara and Aichi, where women were 19.1 years old when they had their debut smooches. This was closely followed by Ishikawa with 18.7 years old. Aichi is the strange one here, since it is the prefecture with Nagoya, Japan’s fourth largest city (after Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kyoto).

The youngest age for women to start kissing was in Tokyo, where women experienced their first kisses at 16.3 years old. We were actually expecting Okinawa to win out, given its pleasant climate and laid-back lifestyle. It seems that the metropolitan life trumps that, though, and people are keen to get on in life and achieve those notches.

In all, the average age in the majority of prefectures was under 18 years old, so, even if youngsters are not having sex, they are at least kissing (presumably each other). Saying that, the ages are probably quite a bit older than the equivalent in the United States or many European countries.

The first caveat to note about this survey is that this data is old — the poll was done in 2014.

Secondly, the number of respondents is hardly representative of the country, let alone on a per-prefecture basis. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting indicator of some trends. We like the fact that Akita, a cold and remote rural prefecture, still manages to come in second after Tokyo!

We also once blogged about a survey that revealed the prefecture where women are most likely to have one-night stands, and another survey that claimed 14% of Japanese women expect sex on the first date.

Japanese netizens with beady eyes and dirty imaginations are speculating that former AKB48 idol Marie Watanabe and now dokusha model (“reader model”) had a career as an amateur porn star.

These are results for both men and women, though the proportions apparently don’t change so much when broken down by gender. Saying that, we’re not sure what century the “upon marriage” people are living in.

Interestingly, when separated by age group, Japanese people in their thirties are much more likely to kiss on the first date — 30%, the highest response. No doubt there are quite a few who go all the way, too. Likely the knowledge of time ticking away makes them keener to follow the Latin motto of carpe diem.

Probably the first thing to note is that the survey data is a bit old — it was conducted in August and September 2017 — but for some reason, people are talking about it now, so it caught our attention.

Now the most important question: does it fit with your experiences?

We know that adultery is quite common in Japan, especially among men — and that’s probably before you even start thinking about the various sex services out there for the guys to try if things get stale.

But women are not holding back anymore. The rapid growth of services like Ashley Madison and the popularity of TV dramas like Hirugao with Aya Ueto suggest that women are also keen to dip their toe into the big ocean of extramarital affairs. A recently announced survey by online manga service Mecha Comic polled people on their experiences of cheating in late January and early February. It got 1,737 responses from female participants. It came up with some interesting results…

Apparently 31% of Japanese women admit to cheating on a lover during a relationship. Six percent even say they were caught!

Before we started deriding Japanese women as sluts, though, the same survey found that 38% of women said their husbands had cheated on them — so it’s a case of boots and other feet, and so on.

The stated reasons for women having affairs seemed quite typical: attraction to the new man (or woman, we suppose); boredom with their current relationship; revenge on their cheating partner, and so on.

Of course, the definition of “cheating” and “adultery” can be plastic. For some people, a date, a hug or holding hands, or even a smooch are not enough. Sure, they may not be morally “pure” either but may not constitute out-right cheating. And then some people might not even consider a quick fling — say, a one-night stand with someone — adultery if it ends there and then, as opposed to a protracted affair that you spend time and effort continuing and concealing from your spouse/partner and family.

As such, the breakdown of what the female respondents felt constituted adultery is instructive. The bar is actually pretty low.

Apparently 9% of respondents think that going out to eat just with another person is tantamount to adultery — perhaps because of the expectation of where things will go or because of how it seems to those around them in public. “Having sex” got 29% of responses, followed closely by “kissing” at 27%. But then “hugging” also received 14% of responses and even “holding hands” got 19%. This might seem strange but then men and women in Japan who are not lovers do not rarely hug or hold hands, so the logic presumably is that if you’re hugging and touching hands, then you’re on the slippery slope to a tumble in the hay.

An online survey by konkatsu “marriage-hunting” web portal Aikatsu asked 1,162 women if they had had sex with someone from their workplaces. More than three in four women admitted to having slept with a coworker.

Given the amount of time that many Japanese people spend at their companies as well as the relatively high number of social events that take place among colleagues, especially nighttime drinking, it is not surprising that many relationships and affairs emerge between coworkers.

But even so, three in four women?! Over 75%?!

According to one summary of the results:

45.5% of the survey participants said that not only had they had sex with a male colleague, and that the physical union had happened without the two being in a committed romantic relationship. An additional 32.2% said they’d only crossed that line after entering into a relationship with a male coworker, leaving just 22.3% who had never mixed business with consenting-adult pleasure.
