A walk through Shinjuku or Shibuya in particular is literally like walking through a parade of hundreds of hot girls. It sometimes seems that every second girl is drop-dead gorgeous.

The first meet-and-greet so-called “handshaking” event for fans to meet their AKB48 idols has been held since the May saw attack that injured Rina Kawaei and Anna Iriyama, and a male member of staff.

Billed as “the idols that you can meet”, AKB48 haven’t been within touching distance for fans for 41 days but returned to extend their hands to the “virginal” palms of Japanese men at Tokyo Big Sight at the weekend.

Immediately after the saw attack there was much speculation that it would spell the end of the mega band’s infamous mass meet-and-greets. Nogizaka 46, a spin-off group, did continue with them, though there were security checks and all bags had to be put in a cloakroom, for a large fee, natch.

In all, the AKB48 event saw around 250 idols, including sister groups, participate, though not the traumatized Rina Kawaei and Anna Iriyama.

In all, security was increased sevenfold. When entering the venue, visitors found fifty body-checking posts. Bags were inspected and metal detectors were used to scan fans’ bodies. For rare cases of female fans, there was a special lane with female staff doing the body checks. AKB48 had turned into airport security!

All bags had to be placed in a cloakroom and fans had to show the palms of their hands to staff. All accessories except for wedding rings had to be taken off.

The handshaking itself took place over a 1-meter plastic fence, separating the fans from their idols.

Organizers increased security from the previously conventional number of 50 to 350, plus event staff went up from 700 to over 1,000. The new measures were estimated to have cost them 10 million yen ($100,000) in security alone. Each member was assigned double the staff detail than before, up to four, all watching each anxious fan as they nervously approached their favorite idols.

Here is one such potentially dangerous fan forced to meet an AKB48 gal over a fence.

A handshaking event held in Osaka the next day on July 6th for sister group NMB48 also saw a sevenfold increase in security. NMB48 had previously postponed handshaking events three times while organizers considered new security measures.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Monday announced the arrest of a 42-year-old woman for selling data that allows for the creation of a model of her genitals, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 14).

On March 20, self-proclaimed artist Megumi Igarashi (@6d745), a resident of Setagaya Ward, allegedly sent a link containing image data that can be read by a 3D printer to a 30-year-old male company employee in Kagawa Prefecture.

The suspect, who was charged the distribution of obscene material electronically, has reportedly denied the allegations. “I do not acknowledge that (the work) is an obscenity,” she told police.

The case is the first of its kind in Japan.

Which doesn’t surprise us at all!

Her crime was officially one of online distribution of obscene images. She was just too prolific in her output! After all, Igarashi/Rokudenashi-ko has also published books, hosts workshops and more.

We’ve just heard of this new documentary which takes a look at one of our favorite places, the love hotel.

While we don’t like the preview’s slightly cheap pandering to exoticism and stereotypes about Japan (“in a society where conformity is everything and public affection cannot be shown…” — really?) that just aren’t the whole truth, we shouldn’t judge it solely by the trailer.

The visuals are interesting, at any rate, promising some nice kinky scenes of S&M inside a love hotel room, by the looks of things. Check out the nurse asking her “patient” if his cock has a name.

It seems to suggest that love hotels are a dying breed fighting against the economic curve. “Can the love hotel survive?” it asks.

Directed by Philip Cox and Hikaru Toda, it is a UK/France/Japan co-production and has no full release date. Given that it is only just over an hour long, it likely won’t play to major movie theaters.

At present the film’s rather scant imdb.com entry states the synopsis as:

Pensioners, lawyers, married couples and teenagers are all customers at the Angel Love Hotel in Osaka Japan. With unprecedented access into one of the most private and anonymous spaces in Japanese society, this film follows the love hotel’s struggling manager and staff as the try to keep their hotel running, as well as revealing the intimate and private lives of the customers who visit.

Apparently the directors filmed it over two years and had success recruiting participants in Osaka, since the city has a reputation for being full of funny people who like to have a good time. By chance, when they were filming the government tightened up rules about love hotels and this ended up with the love hotel the makers focused on actually having to shut down at the end. Of course, these crackdowns are parallel the political sphere and also similar developments in the nightclub scene in Kansai.

Though the trailer boasts that the love hotel has existed for centuries, in fact scholars think that what we now regard as a physical space rented for sex can be traced to the relatively recent past of the early pre-war years. There were enshuku (“one-yen dwellings”) which were lodgings for couples to share the night, but they were commonly used for prostitutes to host clients.

They then blossomed in the post-war years as Japan’s population was young and growing, and was also starting to demand looser morals for all classes, not just those in power like the past. The enshuku developed into inns called tsurekomi (literally “bring in”). These soon exploded; there were apparently nearly 3,000 in Tokyo by the early 1960′s.

The word “love hotel” then came later in the 1970′s after the middle class had evolved more and so the love hotels too grew from being inns to something more flashy, western, and ambitious… and sometimes this had some bizarre interpretations.

The first to appear under the name “love hotel” was the Meguro Emperor, which opened in 1973 in Meguro in Tokyo. After closing down in the late 1980′s, it reopened in 2007 as a classy establishment and still exists today. On top of being more western inside, it attracted attention for its quasi-European castle design. It was a huge hit and the idea caught on.

Although almost every time foreigners write about or make a film about love hotels, they focus on the outlandish hotels. In fact, the vast majority of love hotels, for reasons economic and changing fashions and tastes, are today essentially standard hotel rooms, if quite large for a Japanese hotel and with good bathing facilities for couples. If anything, the amenities are the important feature for most. Of course, the exterior of the hotels are always garish and conspicuous, but even then the majority are still fairly ordinary except for the bright lights.

It’s probably uncontroversial to say that Japan is a culture in which more men use professional sex services than in many other countries. Japanese men have few qualms about using call girls and prostitutes. Japan is also a country with a vast porn industry.

All in all, this creates men less embarrassed by their liking for porn stars or pictures of naked, or semi-naked, women.

Japan’s current cause célèbre has ended in a victory for art, personal liberty and eroticism with the release of self-proclaimed “vagina” artist vagina artist Rokudenashi-ko/Megumi Igarashi from police custody. She was arrested earlier this week for using Campfire to raise funds for a project involving making a 3D printing of her own genitals.

“I have always stuck to my artistic principles,” she said. She wants to to revolutionize Japanese society’s taboos on depicting and talking about female genitals. Now she’s famous for getting arrested, perhaps she has a better chance!

It is true that sex and nudity is EVERYWHERE in Japan, but NOWHERE. Since the rice of celebrity “hair nude” photo books over two decades ago some attitudes started to change and a few mainstream films escaped the censor if the full-frontal nudity was for comedic purposes.

However, even photographers as prominent as Leslie Kee have been arrested for daring to show full nudity in art exhibits. If you are gay or female, you face repression, it seems!

While the pixellation censorship is one aesthetic issue, the complete burying of the question of genitalia is another — as it is also links into some entrenched problems as the suppression of women in Japan.

Rokudenashi-ko/Megumi Igarashi is obviously a clever person, not another case of “wacky Japan” like some in the western media would like to patronize her as while they giggle at Japanese people. Though we also chuckled at the sheer outlandishness of her art projects at first, we applaud her stand and how she seizes on her new-found platform to bring about change.

Her artist name means “good-for-nothing-girl” and though she would seem to be a bit infantile in her obsession with “manko (pussy) art”, in fact she is bringing important issues into the public realm through her various sculptures, workshops, exhibitions, books, and stunts such as paddling in a “vagina kayak”!

After being detained on July 12th for online distribution of 3D data of her vagina, she was released on Friday night. She had emailed fans who funded her art project via Campfire with data of her vagina so they could make 3D prints of it.

“I believe this arrest was completely unjust and unreasonable,” said Igarashi.

The 42-year-old’s plight was met by consternation by feminists, art lovers and those who just like a countercultural cause. Ten police officers were sent to arrest her. Ten? What did they think, she was going to attack them with her vagina?!

The Tokyo District Court on Friday annulled her arrest and she was liberated… or at least, only so far as Japanese society is liberated in the first place!

Her cause attracted over 17,000 signatories in two days to an online petition to get her released.

“I have often wondered why Japanese TV shows edit out” slang words for vagina “like it’s the normal thing to do,” she said. ”But this is (a part of) my body, and I don’t understand why it’s considered obscene.”

“I’m fighting against a society that for some reason brands female privates as taboo,” she said.

Go girl!
