What really turns you on? Is it what you see and touch? Or what you smell?

Tama Toys actually has a whole series of tie-ups like this with VTubers, who are popular for their looks as much as their voices. Hosho Erena Anglais, for instance, previously released this masturbator toy.

The moral panic over host clubs and prostitution in Japan continues unabated with a story yesterday in the Tokyo Shimbun about a 20-year-old woman whose whopping ¥10 million debt to a club prompted her to begin doing sex work.

While still a high school student in Kanagawa, she went to a host club in Yokohama in autumn 2021. The chandeliers and attention of the hosts seduced her, and she was hooked.

She ended up with a debt of ¥10 million, forcing her into prostitution at Okubo Park, Kabukicho, to pay it off. The club was demanding she pay back as much as ¥300,000 a day. Even after she has stopped going to host clubs since October, she is still ¥1.6 million in debt.

Because clubs offer a pay-later “urikakekin” system, women can end up racking up debts that they struggle to pay.

Social media is awash with videos and reports of hosts physically abusing young women in the streets or forcibly escorting them to ATM machines to collect their fees (we saw one viral video in which a host prevented a woman from escaping in a taxi and took away her purse). For all their glamor and gentlemanly manners, the image of hosts is now shifting to something more exploitative and abusive.

Many of the women who go to host clubs are themselves hostesses with a lot of cash to spend, but others are young, vulnerable women who enjoy the attention of the hosts. This is quite different from the typical demographic of patrons at hostess clubs, who tend to be older men on expense accounts.

Barkers will entice young women in by offering them an initial visit for as low as ¥1,000. But once inside, a host will work his charm on the customer so she stays longer or returns for a more expensive visit.

Fueled by such stories and rising instances of streetwalkers in places like Okubo Park, where some 40% of detained women said they were doing sex work to pay for host clubs or underground idols, the current moral panic over host clubs may end in stricter regulation. Lawmakers are currently mulling what they can do.

The cops are meant to be the ones protecting us and taking down the bad guys, right?

Not always, it seems. Yesterday, Japanese media reported on a female police officer who has been arrested for impersonating a man in a “romance fraud” to get money.

The 25-year-old Yurina Otani is a cop in Osaka but moonlighted as a fraudster, it is alleged.

She apparently pretended to be a Canadian male doctor on social media and even an actual Japanese fashion model from July to August. Well, that certainly trumps a Nigerian prince.

By constructing stories about needing money for “patients in Yemen,” she tricked two women in their fifties and sixties out of ¥900,000 in cash. The women, who lived in Saga and Saitama respectively, transferred the money into Otani’s account.

The total confirmed losses of the two women are as high as ¥13.34 million, including the money they spent in addition to the cash they sent her.

Otani did not act alone but was part of a fraud group, which used multiple bank accounts.

The soon-to-be-former cop has admitted the charges.

Otani was an officer at Nishinari Police Station in Osaka, one of the roughest parts of the city. Acquaintances have told the media that she was a popular, positive, and sporty person with lots of male friends.

Choose experience over youth, people say, and this certainly applies to experience in bed.

But how much experience is enough? How about mid-fifties?

As Fumie Nakajima is proving, you can still look ravishing at that age — and there are plenty of people who will pay good money to see it.

The actress and model is releasing her latest gravure image video later this month. The 90-minute DVD shows off 55-year-old Fumie Nakajima’s slim and healthy beach body.

Japan has begun a trial roll-out of the morning-after pill, finally bringing availability of emergency contraception in line with most other industrialized nations.

To the chagrin of condom manufacturers (of whom Japan has some of the best in the world), a lot — if not most — sex in Japan is unprotected, resulting in a lot of unwanted pregnancies or fears of conception (not to mention, an explosion of syphilis cases).

Sometimes it seems that every celebrity marriage is the result of the woman in the partnership getting pregnant, which is hardly the best example to set (and, let’s be frank, probably not the best way to initiate marriage).

Though abortion is also common (122,725 women underwent abortions in fiscal 2022) and largely free of the stigma it carries in other cultures, Japan has lagged in terms of providing women with easy access to the morning-after pill. It was previously only available with a prescription from certain medical practitioners with an appointment.

Now women will be able to take the morning-after pill without a prescription, as reported earlier in the year. (Japan also finally approved the abortion pill last year, but requires the male partner’s consent.)

Over-the-counter sales of emergency contraception began on November 28 at between two and six pharmacies in each prefecture of Japan (a total of 145), the result of years of campaigning by citizen groups. That’s a tiny number, of course, but this is just a trial run and hopefully will lead to a full roll-out next year.

Women must make an appointment at the pharmacy in advance and pay up to ¥9,000. Moreover, pharmacists are not permitted to give to anyone under 16 and 16- and 17-year-olds have to be accompanied by a legal guardian.

In tangentially related news, Tokyo ranked bottom of all Japan’s prefectures in total fertility rate, and the number of births in Tokyo fell for the seventh consecutive year — down down 4,307 to to 91,097 in 2021.

Marriages are actually up (should we thank a post-pandemic boost to dating? Or thank Tinder?) up 5,366 from 2021. The marriage numbers are the highest in Japan, but that’s hardly surprising considering the population of Tokyo compared to other places.

But people get married later in Tokyo, with ages the highest in Japan: the average age of first marriage is 32.3 years for husbands and 30.7 years for wives.

When Kasumi Mori posed for Anan magazine earlier in the year, she proved that female Japanese TV newscasters and announcers are just as sexy as gravure and fashion models (for more proof, see Akane Takiyama and Minami Tanaka — now if only Mayuko Wakuda would go freelance and answer our prayers with a lingerie shoot!), and that Anan magazine remains one of the great producers of sensual shoots (as our summary of a decade of Anan celebrity shoots amply demonstrates).

She is a fourth-year student in the economics faculty at the University of Tokyo, regarded as the most elite college in Japan. She won the Miss Todai beauty contest in 2020 and was Miss of Miss 2021, essentially crowning her as the most beautiful university student in Japan.

Friday has also published a 120-page digital photo book to accompany her debut.

There is something of a trend for gravure idols who are either current or graduates of prestigious universities.

The gorgeous Serina Fukui studied as Keio University. The alluring Ayako Inokuchi went to Aoyama Gakuin.

Other examples of brainy gravure idols with impressive alma maters are Reina Triendl (Keio), Mariko Seyama (also Keio), Naomi Trauden (Keio yet again!), Fumika Mizukasa (University of Tokyo), Minami Fukuoka (Tokyo University of Science), and Asako Tani (Hosei University).

Asa Kamiya is now signed to a talent agency so we can expect her to continue her career in entertainment and modeling after she graduates.

They say that YouTubers and other social media content creators are the new celebrity elites of our day, and that seems to extend to their romantic escapades.

A list has emerged apparently showing the sexual conquests of the macho male YouTuber Purotan, who has 2.1 million subscribers to his channel.

The list features 127 women. It was supposedly saved on Purotan’s phone and then leaked by another YouTuber, Yagi, after their own relationship ended badly. Purotan has apparently paid ¥5 million as compensation for his alleged domestic violence and infidelity. Yagi appeared in Purotan’s videos as his “secretary.”

One of the people on the list is the beautiful female YouTuber Epopo, who has since publicly admitted that she did sleep with Purotan. She said their relationship ended when he sent her a LINE message that he actually had a girlfriend and she had found out about his affair.

Looking at the list, it actually seems to contain a lot of women from compensated dating clubs as well as a lot hostesses. In those cases, it was probably a matter of paying generously for dates that ended with sex.

The list also contains college students, at least two AV actresses, and various types of idols. It seems like he also met a lot of the women at group dates (go-kon).

More “ordinary” professions listed for some of the women include dentist, cabin attendant, dancer, and nurse.

Purotan has released a video admitting the list is true and apologizing. He says he is no longer in contact with any of the women on the list.

Perhaps it’s time we stopped doing this blog and started a new career chapter as a YouTuber instead.

The Japanese porn star Nanami Yokomiya (横宮七海) has died. She was just 21 years old. Her death was announced on social media over the weekend by her friend, Moratorium Hamada.

She made her debut in the industry 2021 and continued to appear regularly in adult video productions. She was best known for Lolita-style (rori-kei) roles.

Fanza has 248 releases for her name as of writing, including several yet to come out later this month (presuming these are not canceled).

Hamada has shared messages that she and Yokomiya exchanged before, suggesting that Yokomiya took her own life. We have intentionally refrained from publishing these, though they are easy enough to find if you search in Japanese.

We cannot confirm any of the details and no mainstream media outlet has reported on her death as of writing. However, several other prominent porn stars have reacted to the news on social media.

We recently wrote about TV announcer Kasumi Mori’s continued forays into modeling, including a sexy photo shoot for the magazine Anan.

We ended by musing that it was high time that the 28-year-old put out her first photo book, following in the wake of the example set by former announcer Minami Tanaka, who made a hugely successful shift to modeling, released a bestselling photo book, and has now also done some acting.

That proved a naive comment, since of course Kasumi Mori and her management were thinking about this.

She has since announced the release of her first photo book, tentatively titled Su no Kasumi (Pure Kasumi).

It comes out in Japan from Gentosha on February 28 and promises to be a big hit.

A survey has found that 46% of unmarried Japanese men in their twenties have never dated a member of the opposite sex.

The figure is a record high, representing a significant increase from 34.2% in the last survey two years ago.

The survey by Recruit Bridal Research Institute found a slight drop in the numbers of men in their forties who have never dated (down from 27.1% to 22.9%), but a rise in the numbers of men in their thirties (up from 35.4% to 41.2%).

Just 26.7% of men in their twenties said they currently had a partner.

On average, 43.5% of men said they wanted to get married in the future, down from 47.1% last time. Of the men who said they didn’t want to marry, the most common reason they gave was because marriage would make things difficult for them financially.

Among women, 29.8% of unmarried women in their twenties said they had never dated a man, which was a slight increase from the previous survey’s 24.3%. There was a similar trend among the results for women in their thirties (25.3%, up from 23%) and forties (26.5%, up from 19.9%).

On average, 49.3% of women said they wanted to marry (down from 59.7% last time). But unlike the guys, the women’s reasons were mostly related to the impact marriage would have on what they could do in life.

The survey was carried out online in early September with 1,200 unmarried men and women aged between 20 and 49.

Could we be witnessing the long-term impact of the pandemic? Or is it all due to Japan’s stagnant economy, where wages remain low while prices slowly and incrementally increase?

On the other hand, the survey only collected results regarding straight relationships. It specifies “dating the opposite sex,” suggesting that gay people were not served well by the available responses. But we guess a research institute linked to wedding services is unlikely to be interested in same-sex couples, who are not able to marry legally in Japan.

Every time we think Tama Toys can’t surprise us anymore, its designers come up with a truly WTF concept and our proverbial jaw hits the table.

Hats off and cocks out, the brand has done it again with one of its latest releases: the Kodoku Tsubo Poisonous Insect Pot Onahole.

The toy is whacky as its title suggests. The visuals on the box art and the toy itself are even crazier.

The masturbator is inspired by a Nara-era kind of magic called kodoku, in which poison is extract from the most venomous, strongest insects. It is derived from Chinese gu magic.

To appeal to female customers, Ravijour, like Peach John, commonly uses famous idols, models, and other celebrities. This is the first time we can recall it hiring a major adult video performer to front a campaign.

Yesterday saw the release of a new DVD by one of our favorite gradols, Eimi Matsushima. The Saitama native who is tall and busty has put out a new 105-minute DVD called special thanks to… and, as the title suggests, it is meant to be her final gravure DVD.

Though we haven’t seen anything officially saying she will retire from gravure (and she ostensibly claimed on Instagram that she will keep working), it is possible that this will be the next step after the DVD comes out. Perhaps we’ll get lucky and she’ll do a splashy final big shoot for one of the weeklies or even a photo book.

Now 31 years old, Eimi Matsushima made her debut in 2014 and quickly turned heads with her statuesque figure and F-cup breasts. In addition to numerous DVDs, she has released three photo books — but the last one was in 2018, which is a lifetime in the gravure industry.

A retiring actress has complained that the mainstream media is ignoring the open secret that is the casting couch in the entertainment industry.

Though the sexual abuse that took place at Johnny’s has now received the media attention it deserves after decades of silence, Misa Hayashi (林美佐) has said that there are still major issues of abuse in the industry.

In an interview with Daily Shincho, Hayashi relates how she was told to sleep with people when her DVD sales were poor. This was when she was working as a gravure idol in her twenties.

As we have noted in the past, the casting couch — pressure to sleep with influential people to get ahead in the industry — is something of an open secret in the gravure, modeling, voice actor, and music idol worlds.

In Japan, it is known as makura eigyo (literally, pillow business).

Certain managers and producers will even approach young and impressionable women trying to make their name in the industry with the offer to help if they sleep with them, as Ayana Kobayashi recently described.

Now aged 33, Misa Hayashi appeared in a play at a theater in Shinjuku in which she played the lead role. It was her final official role as an actor. In the past, she did gravure and released seven image DVDs.

Another exploitative aspect of the industry is that some management agencies charge fees for training their idols. In the end, Hayashi had to pay to join an agency through its training scheme.

And the agencies also don’t always pay their talent properly — or at all. In the interview, Hayashi gripes about how her previous management agency didn’t pay her at all for her DVDs. She had to make money from working in restaurants at night or borrowing money from her boyfriend.

And when her DVDs stopped selling, she was told to sleep with the president of a certain company to prevent her gravure career from fizzling out.

It’s Christmas in Tokyo, which means . . . what exactly? Well, not really Christmas in the traditional sense.

Christmas in Japan is, of course, not a holiday per se (and falling on a Monday this year, everyone will be working as normal, including yours truly), but Santa cosplay is very popular, as are “Christmas cakes” (which rarely resemble what a European might expect), German-style Christmas markets, and going on dates on Christmas Eve.

In fact, Christmas is basically just a romantic day for couples, and one of the busiest times of year for love hotels.
