We’ve long said that Tenga are one of the most interesting sex toys brands not just in Japan, but in the whole world. Here’s another example.
They are innovative for two reasons. Their approach to sex toys always prioritizes the design of the product, from the way it looks on the outside as well as the inside, and even the packaging.
Secondly, their attitude towards marketing, which is bold, clever and fun.
Although the brand has lots its personal touch since it got absorbed by Soft on Demand and started using a major ad agency, we can’t think of many sex toys that would sponsor an art exhibition, music event, manga… and now a beach clean-up day.
Yes, sex toys are not just releasing your bodily juices in a selfish way. They also help improve society.
It’s the end of the summer and Japan’s beaches have taken a battering from all the youngsters who swarm to the sands during the hot weekends. Lots of food, drink and sex. All this means lots of garbage to be cleaned up.
Tenga has got together with environmental group Umi Sakura to organize an adults-only Enoshima clean-up day on September 27th. In the afternoon they are encouraging folk to come down to the beach, one of the most popular in the Kanto region, and help collect as much garbage as you can.
And here’s the twist.
Fill a bag with garbage during the 90-minute event and you get a free sex toy, a Tenga Egg.
Fill another bag and you get a Pocket Tenga. And this then continues, a Pocket Tenga for every subsequent bag.
So the more industrious you are, the better your reward. Talk about a Protestant work ethic, without the sexual hangups!
As this is a Tenga publicity stunt, the eye for design is also as smart as ever. Participants won’t be collecting garbage is just any old bag, they will get their own Tenga bag.

So there you have it. Proof that masturbation can save the planet. Get to work, everyone!
