Noriko Yabu is a 33-year-old artist who takes selfies.
Nothing special in that.
Except her surreal selfies are underwater, and she’s naked.
Her series of images are called Suisou, which could be read as “acquarium” or “cistern” but the characters she uses mean “water funeral”.
So is this a dead body in the water? Are we turning into necrophiliacs?
We find these immensely subtle and erotic, or are revealing something about ourselves? Does no one else share this fetish?
There is a long tradition of water and sexuality in Japan. Nude scenes in films are called nureba — literally “wet scenes”. Not surprisingly, bathing scenes are a staple of any porn or fantasy. We would also venture that mutual bathing is a far bigger thing in Japan than in other cultures and naturally this links into sex too. Even many old hot spring resort like Beppu in Kyushu were originally just places for couples to get away and screw.
These onsen towns would have sex museums complete with artifacts and strip shows to help get shy couples in the mood before they headed to their private bath!
Who else finds a wet body sexy?
