American film website TC Candler has issues its yearly list of “most beautiful faces”.
Japanese girls featured: Satomi Ishihara was at #32, followed by Nozomi Sasaki at #41, Mirei Kiritani at #46, Haruka Shimazaki (from AKB48) at #56, (recently married to yet another foreigner) Ayumi Hamasaki at #60, and finally Aya Ueto at #99.
Despite the ubiquity on Japanese advertising of people like Atsuko Maeda, Emi Takei and Ayame Goriki, they were nowhere in sight and so can be presumed to have little to no global presence. So much for Dentsu.
Kiritani was at #12 last year while Sasaki has been on the list four times. However, this is Ishihara’s first time as “top Japanese beautiful face”, and it’s the first appearance on the list for the other girls.
Sadly for the Japanese, K-Pop star Nana from After School was chosen as #2, while Girls’ Generation Taeyeon was at #9, miss A Suzy at #14, and Jessica at #20.
I think that’s Korea 1, Japan 0.
Oh, and by the way, #1 was Marion Cotillard.
